countertop overhang?

I have a wall that my kitchen cabinets will but up against. It is only 23.5" deep, so I want to fir it out so the counter top is flush. The cabinets are custom but will be the standard 24" depth. I will be using soapstone tile as my counter top surface.

Is there a standard overhang size?

How far are your tiled countertops from your wall?

Basically I am trying to figure out how far I need to fir the wall. We will be using 1/2" rock on the wall.

My stone fabricator says the standard countertop overhang is 1-1/2" for an overlay door, and probably 3/4" for inset doors. The countertop must cover the tops of the doors to prevent liquid spills from dripping down the front of the cabinet.

Other people may have different ideas, but I think thats pretty standard. Good luck and HTH.

Hey, me too! My cab guy suggested building out to 26 inches to be safe. I like to live dangerously, so I built it to about 25.5. Drywall starts tomorrow!

We built our cabs and countertops to be flush. Looks nice for a modern look, and yes, spilling is a problem, just need to be more careful.

If you can make the sheetrock and cabinet flush, thats great. But if everything is not plumb & level, and the cabinet winds up sticking out 1/8", that would look bad. Just my opinion.
