My mother just remodeled her kitchen and her pendant lights hang where you can still look under them without bending down to look "through" them- you don't want them to be an obstruction. We are remodeling in a few weeks and need to pick pendants as well- that is the rule of thumb i will be using too :) good luck! maybe mention how wide your peninsula is to help everyone to visualize better. :)
