TKO and need your Help!

I thought I was finished with my low budget remodel. These are my open shelves. However, I just do not like them. I was considering buying a couple of 15 inch ikea cabs and placing them on either side (leaving the above the fridge shelves as they are) and then adding some thinner shelves in between the two cabs.

Any thoughts? Ideas for color? The bottom cabs on that wall are cream and the island is a deep brown. The counter is a medium color butcher block wood and the granite on the island is Bianco Antico.

Thanks so much in advance. These things plague me.... keep me up at night... so crazy! I figured you all would understand : )

btw I painted the pantry door a deep brown as well.

Why don't you like them? I think they look great(but I'm partial to open shelving as that's what I have also). To me, I think it's the stainless shelves above the refrigerator that detract from the brown wood shelves.

If you really want cabs, what about the flip up ones that Ikea has. Or, if you want a traditional side opening door, what about glass doors?

How much space do you have to work with from the fridge to the wall? What if you put in some short cabinets, say 12"-15" high from the fridge to the wall? It could act as closed storage for some of your stuff, but you'd still be able to use the top of the cabinet as open shelving. You could do the same thing at the very top of the wall as well instead of your open shelving if you wanted to, but that might close things up more than you want.

I just realized you may have a clearance issue with cabinets above the range if you follow my suggestion. This should have already come up with your shelving, but cabinets or shelving above a range need to either be fireproof (stainless) or else be higher. Most ranges specify 30" above the range as the minimum distance needed for a combustible surface. THis is a fire safety issue. Using actual stainless cabinets would allow you to have them lower than a wood cabinet, although you wouldn't want to store food stuffs in them!
