Friends Broken Truck Mirror

I will try to make this short. This is a goofy project.

A friend gave us a truck about 12 years ago. Several years ago before I ever did mosaic my hubby accidently broke one of the side mirrors. I gathered up the broken mirror glass and it has made three moves with us. When he replaced the mirror frame I grabbed the old one out of the garbage too.

Our friend has property in Nevada and hopes to build a house there. He rides endurance horses and has done the Virginia City race. He likes hunting and fishing. So I have been gathering things to add to HIS truck mirror to make it ok again.I used the original broken mirror bits.

I did not fix the dent that broke the mirror. I just did mosaic around it. I did not paint the metal part of the mirror I want it just as it came off the truck.

YEP I grouted it BLACK!!! Hehehe I wanted to do it turquoise. I did not have the right color turquoise paint to mix into my grout.

SHADES...That is AWESOME!!!! I truely love this inspired project! very COOL

Thanks NT. I knew I wanted to learn how to do mosaics years ago. Cleaning up my stash I came across this project again and it was easier to just do it than try to move it around again. LOL

I love this Shades! It's so meaningful and fun!
He is going to really get a kick out of it!
Why did you post it on this side? Hardly anyone comes over
    to the conversation side.
    Great project Shades!

OH MY I thought I was on the project discussion side. There was so much other talk on the other page. I clicked over here. Guess I need more sleep or something. Guess I should pay more attention. Sorry. Oh well it will keep a good project post from scrolling off the back end.

Thanks I hope he likes it. Was fun to do.

I know....I have to double check where I am sometimes too!
Post it over there anyway. It's sad to see an old post drop off for every new post, but it's a worthy post. Post it up Shades!

WOW !!! He's going to live it !

That is totally cool. Post it on the other side!

"chuckle!" Who would have thought about mosaicing a side mirror! This is great.......you clever girl! What a great memory piece!!!

Really cool, Chris! Like that turquoise color!

Well, you l'il heifer!!! That is the neatest thing. I sneaked over to this side - seldom come here, but was pleasantly surprised to find a wonderful project. I, too, am surprised at the amount of discussion on the other side where no work is involved. Questions and games etc. I joined the forum to show/tell and get valuable information regarding projects I'm working on at the moment, not to see websites that I can look up for myself, or to discuss Off Topic subjects or to see endless questions that one could easily Google for answers. **sigh** - sorry if I sound negative, but this side is for expressing our feelings, right????????????

    Yes I agree Slow!!

I honestly thought I was on the right side. Gets so confusing when there are so many off topic posts on the ON TOPIC side. Not nice to fool with an old ladies brain. I get confuzzled easliy.

I will just leave it over here so the game posts and what were they thinking posts do not get bumped off at the end sooner than needed. SNORK

I think it has been explained so many times that conversations on daily life and thrift store shopping what did you find etc, go on this side and the other posts about actual projects go on the Discussion side. But if no one else cares that wonderful posts like your bathroom counter with blow by blow pictures leave us forever then there is nothing I can do.

There is a FAQ at the top of the page for newbies to read with lots of the same new questions answered. I think I read that FAQ so many times I think I almost had it to memory. I even printed it out!

I saved the back side page 67 pictures for myslef and have spent lots of time on the back end of these threads trying to save the important, to me, threads. Someday I will burn a CD of them to have forever. It is such a shame to see them leaving so fast. Every silly post looses a post on the back end.

I just hope those that are making the off topic posts would come on this side and do it. PLEASE There are lots of pages left on this side. I am sure we all want to hear what you have to say and share in your fun just NOT ON THE ON TOPIC SIDE .It is a shame to think we need a post warden. And who wants to be that post warden?

So ok I am the bad guy now.

Thanks for the nice comments on the mirror. It is a goofy thing but I do think it will mean a lot to him.

Oh and there is meaning to the position of the things on it. It says "It is Time to get your Boots on and get moving on Building that House you want so bad and Retire to go Hunting and Fishing." He is my age and is NOT well.:^((

I'm with you Slow, and shades you did a really good job there girl!!!

Hey Slow and Chris, I understand what you're saying. I don't think anyone has thought about it in terms of valuable projects falling off the backside. I certainly didn't equate the two issues until you brought it up. I will certainly think twice about what I am posting over there and whether it would be more appropriate over here. So I actually appreciate that you brought the issue to my attention.

Incredible, and very heart warming Chris. Not to mention the lovely art you created.

    okay, guilty as charged...

I'm sorry ladies I'll try to remember some decorum from here on.

I just read everything ....... what's gotten into everyone ??? Glue fumes ? LOL There's no set rules on where to post .. and I don't think anybody should be made to feel bad because they posted on the wrong side. I'm guilty of it ,too.

I think everybody should take a deep breath ... step back and have yourselves a good chocolate ... LOL ... This is nothing to get worked up about . By the way -- if anybody has some DOVE chocolate --- would you share ? hehe ..

That is really cool. And nothing is safe from mosaic's. LOL

    Wonderful Chris!
That really is a special project. You put so much thought into making it personal for him.
On the other topic, I'll try not to respond to every post from now on. That should save some space for what you consider to be more important.

WOW! What a great project, made with lots-o-love!!!!

Chris this is so awesome...look at you being so inventive and cool!!! I think this is one of the coolest things I have seen lately!!! That is a sweet story about it also!!!

As far as OT goes...yeah sometimes we do go overboard. But for the most part I dont mind. We are all human and want to share...but I also dont want all the posts to drop off so fast. Im STILL hunting for Janes Peacock and for the life of me cant find it...soo I also will try to not post unwanted stuff on the other side.

Thank you very much for all the sweet comments about the mirror for our friend.

The OT thing Well screw it. I give up . If no one else cares the great posts scroll off then that is fine with me.

All I was asking was for off topic posts to come on this side and on topic posts to be made on the discussions side.I would not think that would be so hard understand and to do . If it is that hard then do whatever you choose I am NOT the board warden.I will just mosey on out of here.Bye

What a nice thing to do for your friend. And to carry it around all these years. Its beautiful and I'm sure he will appreciate and treasure it.

Chris, that is a great project!! I love the whole idea!!

Please don't go. I love your projects!!

BAMA- i don't think not responding is the answer. It's the actual posts, not the responses Though I could be wrong ;-) Anyway, not responding will lead to another whole round of hurt feelings.

Well I guess I've been guilty of this too. Honestly
never really thought about which side to post on. This
one always seemed more 'no mans land' than a 'go to' place.
I can see the point though. Especially if it's upsetting to some.

Now I'm going back to bed, as the dreaded flu bug has
reared it's ugly head for round II.

Sorry to hear about the flu Linlee..hope you feel better soon!

    Shades- please dont go....

Well, I guess that'll put a stop to my "what did you acquire this week" threads. Personally, I thought things that you found to break up for mosaic use, and bases that you found at the thrift store WERE project based...
I never show you the clothes I buy. I don't show you the plant stuff I find...you only ever see what I plan to use for mosaic projects.
I'll just google from now on for answers to my questions. Again, I would rather ask my questions HERE to people who actually do this stuff all the time, and have reasons why this glue or that glue is really the worst thing you could use on "X" project...contrary to what some 'general mosaic DIY site' might tell you to do. That's why I ask my basic questions here (there).
So...I guess the discussions side is only for WIP/Show & Tell?
Help me out here...trying to get a grip on this now so I don't clutter up the other side with stuff that was previously determined should be put over here instead.

There is another thread on the discussion side with more on this (Girl Guides? I think?) but I'm still unclear also. So far, I guess I'm just getting we should think about it before just posting willy nilly over there? I thought the same as you though if it makes you feel better.

Chris, if you are still here, your mirror is awesome! what a great idea, I'm sure your friend will love it!

I hope you were only saying goodnight, and not goodbye! Most people here have been so helpful with insight/appreciation/advice that it is sad to see the arguing. I don't share the same style, likes of colors and ideas of everyone, but I do brag up this forum all the time! Always saying how friendly/helpful everyone is! Maybe it IS the full moon coming! Hope it all blows over, and we can still be friends! Jennie

SHADES!!! How I still hope you are checking out this thread, even if you don't respond. I just read it top to bottom, and apparently I totally missed seeing your mosaiced mirror before you pulled it. I am so sorry, sounds like it was something to behold! I am also very sorry we women seem to get our panties in a wad so often, as my sister would say. I agree with you, FWIW, on what should be posted where, but I guess I don't worry about stuff falling off so much ('cept for MY stuff, of course! :) Anyway, I plan to ride this wave and stick around a while. I hope EVERYONE else will also. It's a great group, the best on the web that I've ever been a part of.

    Hi Chris,

Ok now I get it. I didn't know it was this thread that was hijacked. I luckily did see your mirror before it was pulled it was cute and you are a sentimental. You did a great job. I am wondering if you had to reseal the mirror pieces before doing the mosaic.

Well, excuse the hay outta me for daring to express my opinion and thinking we could have a discussion re some of the things that have been bothering several of us for some time. My intention was NOT to start a war, it was to try to bring some back to the basics of what we are about. I loved this forum so much b/f it became a chat board. It was such a pleasure to see such beautiful work and to discuss it. I read every single entry, and even followed every response EVERY DAY. A few weeks/months ago, I started being more selective and just read the new WIPs, and continued to try to help newbies. After spending some time yesterday to try to find a comparable forum, I was unsuccessful. I intend to continue to read selective entries, and try to help those w/legitimate questions on proceedure/materials. There is so much information on the internet available, and before I came to the forum, I HAD done my homework, reading everything I could find re mosaics on the net and in books I'd bought. I am so very sorry that wonderful artists have left because I stated an opinion. I'll definitely not do that again. Forgive me for starting a war.

In light of all that has transpired over the past
few days, may I be so bold as to ask the following?

If 'discussions' are for specific projects and
'conversations' are for everything else, why is a
project (the wonderful truck mirror) on the conversation
    side?

The mirror indeed deserves to be seen and discussed.
    Very unique, very cool!

Tempest in a teapot. This forum will continue on with and without the drama, the hurt feelings, and the new rules. It has before and it will again - it always moves forward. Sometimes slowly and sometimes not.

I think the ivillage gurus make a great deal of sense not having a moderator here. The moderator would come down on one side or another and alienate someone else.

Live and let live and follow the first rule of internet ettiquette. Take what you like and leave the rest.

    Very good words, MW!

    :-) A brownie for you!

I respond here with the fear that I am 'pushing ' something off the end.

I have read these posts on both sides since last night and am shocked to say the least. I don't understand selective reading. I don't have time to read and respond to every post so I use my time selectively.

In regard to posts falling off, I think a more positive slant is to look forward to all the new projects we will be seeing rather than what we lose. We are all growing artists and evolve as we learn from each other. I have seen some great new artists on our forum.

I personally don't mind answering the repeat questions as we all grow and learn each time we revisit something. It is often very hard to find information in the past posts. As I have been on this forum for a year now, I have seen the change for adhesives go from GE II as the #1 choice to now changing to thinset. So I will tolerate those questions and hope others will too. Learners grow and I want to grow and expand my knowledge in many avenues.

Thank you to all you wonderful teachers, new and old forum members, and I look forward to continuing to share with you in the future. Everyone, take 3 big deep breathes, a walk around the block, and then go mosaic!

    BROWNIES?

Did someone say brownies? I've got coffee all ready for a brownie chaser!

d3- While I applaud your initiative, I'll stay inside, and YOU go walk around the block. It's 10 degrees here. I'll guard your brownie for you...

"Take what you like and leave the rest." Wench you have said what I have been thinking (and doing) since I started to visit here. Things that I kind of skimmed over early on are things that I pay close attention to now and vice versa. I will continue to be here for the wonderful knowledge and inspiration I have found here, not that I've had much to offer back. Maybe someday. I hope everyone comes back to the fold. We each have gifts to share, and I want to experience all of your talent. It's better than all the books in the world.

Like in ANNNYYYYY type of relationship(s)...there are always going to be bumps and curves....etc....and if you want it to work...you gotta work through them. This forum is a mosaic piece of art in and of itself.....it's broken somewhat...but it can be glued back together and become even better! Got glue?

    HA!! Shrty to the rescue!
"Every sixty seconds you spend upset is a minute of happiness you'll never get back."

Relationships are like cutting glass...Press firmly down on the glass (not too hard) and then pull the cutter toward you in one continuous motion. If done properly, you should hear a slight zipping sound the entire length of the cut. Note: Don't ever go back over the score line. This will not only damage the cutter, it will cause the glass to crack, preventing a nice clean break. LOL! I'm not going away! (((GROUP HUG)))

Oh, now this is nice! I came home from shopping with
Mom all day to find things are going well, the brownies
are served, but I had to laugh because I thought we
    had wine in here, too.

    Instead, it was glue!

    Bwa ha ha!

Well I am so very glad that now all of you have reamed me a newA$$ H**E that you have decided to do just as I was so very nicely asking to begin with. Have a good time.I did NOT deserve all of this. No one paid any attention to what I REALLY was saying all of you took it out of context and made a HUGE fight over it. For no reason but to finally decide you were capable of doing what I was asking.Sheese
