Need help with room layout please

I thought I had posted it so not sure if this is a duplicate or not.. forgive me if it is..

I would really appreciate help with my entryway/sitting area.

I have a china cabinet I put near the door and am thinking of building a screen of doors to put behind it to block a half wall that is there. I stuck some doors up to see what this would look like.. would add another one and paint them white. maybe even look for doors with less detail.

Also thinking of painting the back of the cabinet a light color and getting glass shelf... except the tv is in there so not sure if that is just going to look weird...

Next considering putting a glass privacy film on the bottom 2/3rds of the china cabinet, or get a small screen of some kind to put inside there to hide the small TV.

Can't decide if the glass table or the chest should go between the sofa and chair. I think i am leaning toward the glass table because I like the chest where it is.

The walls will be painted the gray color if you see the swatches on the wall with the sofa/chair. The column will be painted white and I am thinking of adding chair railing to the adjoining dining room.

Please let me know your thoughts. I always lurk and am amazed at the great ideas..

    Hi Melly,

Welcome to GW. There are amazing talents here so I'm sure someone will be along to offer their expertise shortly.

I can only speak for myself, but I don't think the china cabinet works in that corner. I would much prefer to see it in the dining room where the fish tank is.

My suggestion would be to put the sofa where the chair and table are now and put the chair where the china cabinet is in the corner. Leave the wood chest in the foyer. An area rug will bring everything together.

My main concern is that there seems to be a desk behind the sofa and the entire arrangement is blocking the archway between your living and dining room.

I was afraid of that, I need an office and I like to look out the window when I work so I was trying to hide the desk behind the sofa : (

I have a sideboard in the garage that I planned to put where the fishtank is. It may need to just stay in the garage as I think adding anything else to this space will just be to much.

The space looked so much bigger when it was empty!

    Thanks for your advice.

I agree with Homeagain. Your lovely china cabinet looks like it was just dropped there, and looks very awkward. Is there a reason you couldn't put it against the long wall? You could still watch TV if it were there. The sofa could go perpendicular to the china cabinet, leaving your work table behind it (function first!), then your chair in the corner. A little ceramic garden stool would look great, with a floor lamp next to the sofa.

I don't care for the glass side table with the glass coffee table; I think it looks too much like a set. But I like the wood chest in the foyer, with the mirror. And, I like your curtains, and don't think you need to replace them. I have gold curtains with my grey walls in my entry. But I'm not sure of the color of your sofa and chair; it looks green on my monitor. If it is, you could find a fabulous pattern for your chairs in green and grey.

I don't understand what you mean by long wall, the one with the fishtank??

I will look for a smaller table to go beside the chair. I am not crazy about the glass one either.

The sofa and chair are a sage color green. Thanks for your response.

I meant the wall where your chair is currently. I thought of it as the long wall, since it's the one unbroken wall. Sorry for the confusion.

Thanks, I will try that. (Its pretty easy to slide stuff on the tile).
I may look for a smaller corner cabinet to go on that same wall in the location the chair is in like this one.

Could you also give us a couple of pix of the wall that runs in the DR, along the stairs from the looks of it. Need to see what that wall has and how it fits in with the traffic flow.

For sure I think the china cabinet needs to go back into the DR, at this point I would say where the fishtank is now. It is a really awkward fit where it is, and instead of becoming a wonderful addition to the space, it just looks like you slid it over there, stuck the tv inside to keep it out of the way, and left it.

You have a nice home and some great pieces. If we can see that other wall, I am sure you will get some more suggestions.

It would also be helpful to see a pix of the desk.

I have added the picture of the wall in the dining room and also of the desk. The desk is positioned so I can see the front yard thru the front window and glance to the side to see the pool thru the kitchen sliders. I can survive without the TV in this room.

The fish tank should be moved in about 2 weeks and I agree the best place for the china cabinet is either against the kitchen wall and I am thinking I will make a fake back for it so I can paint it a lighter color. I don't think I can bear to paint that wood.

I added another pic of a table that is at a local antique store that I am considering to put between the chair and the sofa.

As I think I mentioned the dining room and desk chairs need to be recovered. I am thinking of a purple/gray color. Dropped off half the dining chairs today to get refinished and the rest will go on Saturday.

And I really appreciate the compliments, I bought all the mahagony furniture and glass tables at the flea market or 2nd hand stores. The picture in the floor was free. The side table will be the only item in the room that I pay a fair price for : ) Even the sofa/chair were bought on the final hour/final day of a warehouse sale for a steal. And the mirror was from an outlet. I love bargain shopping, now I am almost done and ready to pull it all together!

What a pretty little desk! I love it. And that side table is absolutely perfect. Snatch it up.
