I love making that salt clay. I used to do it when my daughters were small. We made gingerbread men ornaments with it.

If you make tiles, can you just use joint compound for grout? Might hold up better unless you're putting them on the wall! ( or shellac them first)

I guess. I was grouting today and my BB's started popping off, so I concur with the grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
Nice have you tried the cinnamon ornaments?
1 cup cinnamon
3/4 cup apple sauce
1/4 cup white glue
Cut and set out 3 days till dry flipping every once and awhile. They smell great and last for years. Don't know
if you can mosaic with them though...maybe if you use
the Weldbond?

I hate when stuff pops off when you're grouting. One of Scaredy Mans eyes came off, then while grouting on my mirror, on of the keys came off. CRAP!

so....do you guys scrape out the grout and glue them back on immediatly then gingerly add the grout again or what?
Course that's what I already did...looking for confirmation ;o)

I glued right away. On the key, the grout was still attached to the key,so I glued it all down.
On the eye, I glued, but I'll have to go back with grout later.

Hazie, I modified it alittle - knowing that I wanted to try tiles

3 C flour
1 C salt
1 C water (I substituted admix) LOL
2 tsp oil

knead it until mixed, then roll it out

bake at 250 for an hour then increase temp to 350 and bake until evenly golden.

I decorate western. When we first got married (20 yrs ago), I made a bunch of steer skulls for Christmas tree ornaments out of the salt dough stuff. Some of them have broken over the years, but I still have about 5 of them left.

so they held up huh? I grouted up to my tiles tonight - hoping the moisture won't penetrate the paint...

I had that same salt recipe, but mine had alum in it. I think it helps to harden it. I think I still have that same can for about 30 years now..what else do you do with alum?)
I sure remember the dry hands i had rolling it! ( gloves? nah..)
