Feng Shui

Integrated design is all the rage. Living in Rio De Janeiro where propery values have more than tripled in the last three years I ´ve had to buy a tiny apartment. As a consequence I´ve integrated the kitchen into the living area with a breakfast counter and eliminated walls where possible. The rules of Feng Shui say that I should have a DOOR on my kitchen to prevent strangers from penetrating where they´re not welcome. Does anyone know how I can circumvent this?

Maybe by not inviting strangers into your apartment?

It is difficult to provide a workable solution to your design dilemma without a floor plan or photos of your space.

I wonder if a screen would work as a Feng Shui "cure?"

Possibly some kind of drapery divider?

    Maybe something like a tent?

Actually the first comment shows that the person has no notion of Feng Shui. But I do apreciate that our Western civilization really has ignored the idea of energy flow completely, by integrating cooking and serving areas into living space thereby giving no privacy and encouraging intimacy with food and generosity and abundance.

I think Orangecamera was just trying to make a cute joke. Can you hang sliding "barn" doors from the ceiling to open and close the space? sort of a visible pocket door. Can you show pictures?

I feel that opening up a small kitchen to a larger area is a great way to create better chi flow in a small space. However, I do agree that being able to see the door while cooking is also important. The placement of a mirror/mirrored back splash is a great way to accomplish this since most of us have a stove back onto a wall.

Another great cure is to hang bells on the interior of your front door so that there are no surprises. The idea here is that you want to be relaxed and at ease while cooking in order to create the best nourishment for the food you are preparing. The stove is known as the "Health & Wealth" of the home.

Would love to see photos from both of you to see if there are any other suggestions I/we can give!

I´d love to share the layout but unfortunately I don´t have anything online. BUT you´re right, the tiny kitchen is going to be a big improvement open to the living area and I have a stunning view of the ocean and greenery from my living room window, Great suggestions thank you!!

Mirrors as suggested seem like a good idea according to feng shui, but do not address the original concern of not having a door, or keeping strangers from looking or going into the room. What am I missing in this discussion?

Why dont you place fu dogs too at the entrance of the kıtchen to protect you?

I guess some feng shui consultation may feel you need a door, but I do not. Most homes have open spaces for kitchen/family rooms and it usually promotes a better flow in the home. The mirrors and bell serve to alert the cook to anyone coming into the home and/or the kitchen area.

Since the kitchen is part of the living area, then consider the whole room. There has to be a door somewhere!

    Energy.

The only door apart from a sliding door to the bathroom to the left of the entrance, is the front door.
