Chandeliers, Lanterns, or something else?

Hi all,

I posted the other day which was stupid because I didn't include any photos and you really can't answer the question without knowing what you're dealing with! So here are the photos. My question is, two chandeliers in either bronze or polished nickel with crystals, two bronze bell jar lanterns, or something else over the island?

My island slab (which isn't installed yet - gotta love the plastic party tablecloth) is statuary marble (basically white with dark grey veins) and the counter tops on either side of the refrigerator are dark wood. There's a small sample of the wood on the right side of the fridge in one of the photos. My three faucets and the pot filler are PN (only one faucet is installed right now), the pulls on the white cabinets are satin nickel, the pulls on the island are bronze. I'm just going for your basic traditional kitchen but there are SO MANY great solutions for island lighting that I'm overloaded and can't decide. I'm leaning toward two chandeliers but would that be too much and take my kitchen to the gawdy side? Thanks for your help and please excuse the messy kitchen!

Love your kitchen!!! Really pretty. I think polished nickel lanterns might be great. Crystal chandeliers seem a little fancy, but certain ones might work. Bronze/black stuff would be nice too. Basically, all of your choices sound great. Which appeal the most to you?

I think you could do any of them. Personally I think you can never have too many chandeliers, but that's just me. :)

Here's some better photos so you can see the whole kitchen and where the lights will be hanging...I just stuck the island legs in place for effect. They will be cut down when the slab is installed.

So do you have some pictures of the chandys, pendants, or whatever that you're considering. If you'll post them, maybe someone here could photoshop them onto your kitchen images to help you decide what your like best.

I agree that you can really do whatever suits you. If it were my kitchen I would decide what I am doing for a backsplash. If it is all white subway then I would go for more pazazz in the lights, but if you have some elaborate backsplash planned I might do simple pendants. I think you can't have everything competing for attention. I love your kitchen and it can't wait for more pics as you progress. Hope you will post the details too!

Here are a few that might work in your beautiful kitchen. I love all of your choices so far, very pretty!! Not knowing what your accessories might be, whether you plan to display crystal and china or if you lean more towards pottery and less formal accessories might help you decide between crystals or not. Have you looked at your inspiration photos lately to see if they are more formal or more simple and traditional or something inbetween?

It's so funny how many times I will agonize over a decision, & later, I will see it posted on GW!
First of all, I'm doing a very similar color scheme- creamy cabs for the perimeter & cherry for island (w/white marble?) on a dark wooden floor.

I was at a lighting store just yesterday with the intention of buying 2 small chandeliers. When I saw a lantern with a ribbon of crystals, I couldn't decide. It's not too fancy & yet not too plain. I bought one lantern to see how it will look, but it isn't assembled. I don't even know if it is even used in the kitchen. I just thought it was very pretty. I also forgot that I have a big hood over the island currently.

I don't know how to post a pic of it; but if you google it, you can find a pic of it. It is schonbek chandelier 1241. The metal trim comes in different color. I still haven't decided for myself. I hope this helps.

By the way, what is the color of you perimeter cabs? Is the countertop soapstone? I'm thinking about going w/ giallo ornamental for the perimeter & white marble for the island.

Everyone, thank you for all the great suggestions! I have looked up all the links and you're right, just about anything will work as long as it's not too fancy. I think I'll wait until the glass is in my grid doors and the faucets, marble and back splash are installed. That way I'll have an overall look finished and can take that que when finding a light.

pvcamom: The perimeter cabinets are BM White Dove oil Satin Impervo. They are a beautiful white, but look grey in the above photos because I didn't have the overhead cans on when I took the pictures.
