Backsplash options - which one

Hi,

I have two options for my backsplash. Help please. Let me know if you like either of these or you think I should keep looking.

- - or - -

I doubt this is the design I would go for - I think I would do smaller inset glass tiles - maybe 2" x 2" not 4 x4. Also I might go with regular subway tiles.

Your cabinets seem to be two different colors so I am not sure which is accurate. I like the first one. You really seem to want to use the accent tiles!
There are many people who have used borders and accent tiles with busy granites. If you are going this route you need to find some inspiration pictures.
I think we have mentioned in your previous thread that since your granite is busy, a more subdued backsplash is in order.

    Hi,
    Perhaps this will clarify why I keep leaning towards having an accent tile. I am keeping my tile floor which is a cream tile (too much $ to rip out and replace). So I do think I need something in the backsplash otherwise the kitchen is a sea of cream. I did change to have it be an accent and I will have mostly cream colored tiles. My cabinets are the same color ... just a lighting difference. Also, my appliances will be changed out for stainless steel. {{!gwi}}

Either one, but without the accent tiles. Your granite is busy, the accent tiles are busy ... they clash.

I'm not getting where all the blue is coming from in the accent tiles...I don't see it in the granite, unless it's just the picture.

If you want to do an accent, I would suggest creating a dot out of mosaics (say 2x2) or buying one already made and placing them strategically along the back splash....maybe 6 or 7 only...1 every 2 feet or so. Maybe select a metallic look or something more neutral.

Adding color to a space like this, IMO, should not be with permanent installations, but with those easy to change like curtains, lamp shades, throw rugs and paint. Only exception would be if the color came directly from the granite as the granite and tile will unlikely be changed at separate times.

I don't see any of the colors in either of the accent tile options in the granite. Are you able to see something that's not coming across in the photos?

I can see why you don't want all cream tiles because of the flooring you have. In fact, I don't think I'd want another cream tile at all, even with a coordinating accent. How about going with field tile that's another color that's in the granite, like a soft and med-light browner tile or a gray? It looks like the floor might have gray in it, and gray grout lines? So maybe a taupe or gray backsplash could be a way to connect all the elements in the room. A gray green could be nice if there is anything like that in the granite.

I am not lov'in this choices of accent tile. On my screen the color looks off. I like what Annie has to say about bringing color in with non-permanent items. Pick a color out of the granite and use it on the backsplash, then consider adding color with paint. I see you have a nice beige on the walls, but perhaps a green will add the color you seek. Then find a coordinating fabric for the window and some accent pieces on the counter. Good luck. I know how difficult it is picking a backsplash .

I really like Annie's metalic accent tile with your granite

I like Rhome's idea best: no more cream. Taupes, gray greens, deeper browns, gray all look like options.

Could you please take 2-3 pictures of your granite in different lighting to help narrow down what a good color would be?

I agree with rhome also. I saw your other posts on this. I can tell you love color and want to add it. But because of the business of your granite, you're going to be limited as to what colors you can add. If you go and add blue, it's kind of out if nowhere since there's not one blue speck in the granite. So if you really really love blue/green like I think you do, then I really think you should keep the tile as neutral as possible and maybe add a metallic or snazzy darker neutral accent behind the range. And neutral doesn't have to be cream. Sonoma is one company that makes what appears to be almost tinted tiles that have just a hint of color. Have you tried Bossy Grey from their line? There's another lighter shade that I'm blanking on that might still work but that might help you go into the truly neutral realm and still work with the browns and creams (if that makes sense).

At that point, you can find THE shade of perfect soft blue/green or green/blue paint. Or you can keep your paint you have and accessorize with fabrics and other items. But because your main fixed showpiece is your granite, your other fixed pieces need to match or blend with it. And I feel like these colors and the mosaics just aren't meshing well with your granite.

Another thought popped into my head. Have you thought about putting a rug down in the breakfast area? It would help break up the "sea of cream". I'm thinking if you do a slightly tinted neutral splash then your options are endless with that room! It kind of excites me to think about it. You can add stools around the island, a window treatment, a rug, etc. You can add a great paint color to the entire space, just the kitchen part or just the nook where the table is. Later you can change the table out to something with more oomph if you feel the need. I also think once the stainless is in, it'll look a lot less cream to you. Your space is really great and gives you so many options!

    Hello,

I also agree with Rhome, I'd probably go for a glass tile though, something with a little pizazz!

    Hi everyone,
Thanks so much.... I will post more pictures. I do see blue in the granite. I have to think about the suggestions, then back to the tile store.
