The mosaic tutorials I've read advise against glueing tiles onto drywall. Backerboard is the suggested subtrate. You can attach it to the wall studs, then mosaic directly onto that. You can also do as you suggest, mosaic the backerboard, then attach to the wall, thereby making it portable if you ever move - also easier on your back.

There are some posts in the Garden Junk, and I think Kitchen forums that you might want to look at. They agree with slowmedown.

Okay, I've thought about doing the same area in my kitchen. My questions is...How does a mosaic piece clean up, with grease spatters and such? Will it be OK if it is sealed well?

I sealed mine 3 times, and it cleans up pretty good.

I sealed mine a couple of times and it cleans like a champ. I use those microfibre cloths to clean it and it shines beautifully,

I am going to start a backsplash for my stove area also, I have years of dishes and cups and assorted stuff
My question is what do you all seal it with for easy cleanup

I suggest going to a pro tile shop and asking them cuz I'm a firm believer in ask the pros!

When I sealed the tiles on counters/backsplash in kitchen re-do, I used the Aqua Mix. I prefer Tile Lab now cuz it's glossy, and doesn't show if you don't wipe it off. I haven't had a problem in cleanup behind my stove. I soooo wish I'd known about mosaicing when I did this - I would have gone wild as did KLINGER and MM and mosaiced the WHOLE thing. Waaaah.

I sealed mine with tile lab. I've sprayed it with windex and cleaned it, usually just use a wet microfibre cloth though and it works really well. A couple of weeks ago I cleaned it with my new steam cleaner and it totally sparkled,

Tile Lab here, too. This one. I still have to do a couple more coats.

I haven't done my kitchen yet, but when I did my bathroom, I "painted" the backsplash with the same epoxy I covered all the other surfaces with. It's waterproof and cleans shiny with a Lysol wipe. It's really more sparkly than this photo shows. I have thought if I ever do my kitchen, I MAY do the same thing in there, but it's not necessary I'm sure.
