tile murals

I'm posting this on a few other sites as well, hoping to get some help.

I would like a tile mural over my kitchen sink as there is no window; however, I know I will tire of looking at the same mural every day for the life of the kitchen. I got the idea that as money allows I'd like to be able to change out one mural for another. That means the mural cannot be permanent - it would be attached to a board framed with a braided tile trim. Now I know I could just hang a mural over the sink but my fear is because it isn't permanent it would look odd, cheap or both. I thought if I created a nitch in the wall that the mural would recess into, it would allow the mural to come out even with the surrounding tile so it looks like it is there permanently. (There is no tile on the wall yet, just a plain wall.)

If anyone has read this far, thank you. If you have any suggestions I'd love to hear them.

I'm sure that could be done. I wonder what you could use for fasteners..... the mirror things would show but maybe there is something like that only smaller?? Or some "rosettes" that you could screw into each corner? We can brainstorm something I bet. If my carpenter were here, he'd have three ideas for you!

I think the industrial strength adhesive velcro would hold it -- that stuff is incredibly strong. My only caution would be to put a tab of some sort that you could pull out the insert with -- so you wouldn't damage the surrounding tiles when you need to get behind it.

I love this idea, by the way! Wish I'd thought of it! I love mosaics, but worried about getting tired of looking at the same one forever (or 20+ years, anyway...hopefully).

It's not exactly a mural but there have been several pictures of people just putting up glass against their painted walls. Maybe you could paint something, put up the glass and then repaint it when you are ready for a new look. I thought someone did it with a seasonal approach recently...

OMG - I was just having the same thought over the week-end!
I wasn't worried taht I would tire of the mural, my issue was that I want a tile mural that is $2,200.00 (it's bronze) and I thought what if I move? I'd have to leave my $2,200 mural - NO WAY..also the mural is of Arabian horses and a potential buyer may not find that to be of thier liking and it could turn them off from the total kitchen.

I'll have to look into this with my tile guy - when I get closer to making my tile decisions.

Darrah, you might want to post this on the Mosaics/Stained Glass forum (if you haven't already). I bet they'll have some ideas on how you could do this--great backsplash idea BTW! HTH.

jeannie01 Point me to that mural!! MY thought was if the next person didn't like it and ripped it out and threw it away! I know I can't possibly have it at that price but I've looked and looked for a horse mural that I really like. There's some at Back in The Saddle and a couple on eBay that aren't real pricey but they aren't THE ONE.
