backsplash that includes part of counter

Would it be bizarre (not that that's a bad thing) for my mosaic backsplash to not stop right at the plane change but encroach upon the back 9" of countertop on one wall?? The Soapstone tiles I'm thinking about using on the sink-side of the kitchen are 18", so I only need 3 of them because of the giant Ikea apron sink. I'll be making many of the ceramic tiles myself "from scratch" so can make my own bullnose as well.

I mean, I never really use those back few inches except to put canisters, etc.

I think the only real weirdness I see is what would happen at the inside corner.

I'm going to chime in without reservation and say that it's yours and you can jolly well do whatever you want, in whatever fashion or statement you choose.
the only part of it, is that you only need to have the right supplies for the adhesive, strength and grout, to finish the project without any compromise to the background's integrity.

drawing outside of the lines is the absolute best!!!

If you gave us a picture it would help,i can't tell if it would look unfinished like you ran out or not?

I'm w/SEA on this one. Whatever your ideas are, that's inspiration, and I say "Follow Your Art", and do whatever you dream up. Yeah, what CRACK said - a picture w/help us w/suggestions. Envy all over the place here - making your own tiles/bullnoses!!!!!

slowmedown - your name is telling! ;) You would probably have this project finished by now. I see my reply post from yesterday doesn't appear - I'll try to put up some colored pencil sketches soon, but I'm at the beginning stages here. The other rooms are getting roughed in, and I'm just talking to the cabinet maker today. I'm cutting big pieces of paper the sizes of the countertops, etc., and measuring where the mosaic will go, and reading this board for tips and inspirations. My backsplash will be inspired by a mosaic artist whose studio I wandered into in Ravenna It. a couple of years ago, Anna Fietta.

Great link Betty! (Slow lives up to her name!lol!) I am looking forward to this project of yours...you might want to do a tester first, like a flower pot, just to get a feel of what it's like to mosaic, we always recomend that you pay attention to the grout spaces, to keep them uniform and not too wide. Like everything here, we just suggest and you can take it or leave it, just enjoy your process!
