Best Tile Size/Pattern for Tiny Bathroom?

Our hall bathroom is quite small: probably 5 x 6 feet of floorspace, ending in a bathtub, and the vanity and toilet take up part of that little space.

Previous homeowners replaced whatever the original floor tiles were with large dark brown clay tiles that I don't like at all. Too dark, too textured, never look clean.

When I find a bushel of money, I want to have the whole bathroom retiled and I know what tile I want for the walls (plain white), but I'm unsure of what to do for the floor. With such a small room, is it better to use smaller tiles? I want something clean and crisp looking and easy enough to keep clean with children.

Any tile on the floor is better than the other options, especially with little boys who sometimes miss.... I would use porcelain tile. It's tough, clean, and comes in all kinds of colors and sizes.

Tile washes and sanitizes easily. Carpet does not. Hardwood absorbs..ewwwwwww! And laminate flooring does not like water of any kind!

You are tiling all the walls? or just the tub area?

I viewed a couple houses redone by flippers, and one thing really got me. They did entire bathrooms with beautiful travertine porcelain (tough as nails) tile.

    Good luck to you!

Take a look at our bathroom. Believe it or not it is just 5' 7'' wide and floor space after the shower basically fits a 48'' vanity and a toilet on one side. We used a calacutta look alike porcelain tiles on the floor. The small mosaic is in the shower area and the larger ones in the main floor area near vanity etc.

A small shelf with tiles and marble remnants to one side of the door.

48in vanity. The toilet is right next to it. In fact the TP holder is mounted right on the vanity side. The vanity is open underneath as I wanted to keep it feeling airy.

Our hall bath is only 5x5 and we used 8x8 tiles on walls and floor--looks fine. I think you can use just about anything---large or small. Get what grabs you and don't worry about size..

I would use large tiles. The grout is what gets dirty and is a pain to clean. Large tiles = less grout. That is what I have in all tiled areas of my house. If I had to do over, I would go with a dark colorant in the grout. Again, easier to clean.

GWlolo - do you have the name of the porcelain calacatta tile you used? Thanks!

There are some really nice large format tiles (12" x 24") that you might want to take a look at. We just used them in my daughters' shared bathroom which is not much bigger (7' x 7'). The ones we picked are really easy maintenance b/c they hide dirt so well - it's hard to see well in the photo but these tile are a light blue and light brown and have a texture to them. They weren't super expensive either - somewhere around $8 per sf I think. They come in darker colors as well.

Just stumbled across your posting. When we had our bath remodeled, the tile salesperson suggested we use larger tile in the walk area and of course smaller tile in the shower. I didn't agree. I thought the room would look larger with all the same tile. Wrong!! I used 3x3 hexagon in both areas. Now I'm going to change at least the walk area. The room looks smaller with grout lines everywhere. Also, just toured some new builds in the area and all the small baths had larger tiles. Good luck

Thank you all! I appreciate the photos and the advice. Sounds like large tiles is the way to go, and not-white grout. I think large smooth tiles set on the diagonal will be my starting point, and I'll look around to see more specifically might look good.

I'm glad I asked because I, too, would have thought smaller tiles would be the way to go. But yes, less grout seems both less busy and less work in the future--a win-win!

MarinaGal: Could you post pictures from further back to show perspective. I totally discounted tiles that size because they seemed enormous. My bath is 8x7.

    Thank you!

I have a similar size bath. We used 12x12 tiles and I love it!

auntie ellen - sure thing! It is hard to photograph b/c we carved the room into two pieces - the vanity wall and then the tub/shower and toilet are behind a pocket door. This is a shared jack and jill bathroom. We also used this tile format in a 10x10 bathroom.

Here is the vanity wall part of the bathroom.

Wow, Marinagal, I like that. As close to being solid flooring as we're likely to get with tile. Not too busy, looks neat and easy to get clean. The exact opposite of what I've got in my bathroom now. I am going to keep this one in my idea file.

I had 12x12 tiles on the diagnol in the samll narrow bathroom of my previous house. I liked the way it made the space look wider so when we remodeled our current bath I didnt hesitate to do the diagnol pattern again. This time we used 18x18 tiles.
