Texarkana, Riana Class

bamasusanna

I started this new thread for those of us going to the class March 28/29. I'm really looking forward to meeting all of yall!!

Supply List (copied from Slow)

Tin snips/metal cutter

Lineman Plier - 7" fits most womens hand best.

Trowel - round nose - for mixing and applying concrete

Garden gloves w/rubber palms

Rags

Pigments if you want to color your cement

Wire brush, nail or tooth brush can be useful w/cleaning textured or porous surfaces in smoothing out the concrete.

For those driving, bring your own large buckets/ I have some containers also.

If time permits and you want to begin mosaicing your sculpture on the second day, bring:

tesserae

tools for cutting (nippers or hammer)

adhesives and applicator

Riana provides the metal lathe - it's the diamond-shaped kind used for plastering walls - NOT hardware cloth w/the square holes. She provides the sand, cement and 19 guage wire (I use 18 cuz of lack of hand strength) for stitching, and I think she provides dust masks.

Also, remember to bring your favorite mosaic piece. There will be a gallery show! Entry fee is $5.00 for each piece. This will be used as prize money instead of ribbons.

sorry to interupt but becky can you point me to direction of her webpage? I am in Iowa too and close by so would love to maybe goto that workshop also most likely :)

I'm not BECKY, but gladly present the website to Riana. How delightful to read you're interested in coming to the workshop. You'll LOVE it, and WELCOME. Here's her website. Go to her workshop part, and there's a registration form. Pay no attention to her date for Texarkana. That was the original date, and I've alerted her to the error, but she hasn't changed it yet. It's next Thurs/Fri - 28/29th. I don't know if you'll have time to get it to her via snail mail, so just call her - her phone number is listed. You can pay her here the $250 registration fee. She furnishes all the materials, but check out the tool list. Don't forget to bring one of your art projects, if you are interested in entering it in the mosaic art show in conjunction w/the workshop - the five dollar entrance fee w/constitute the prize money for the winner. I have forms here for registering you art for entry.

eklypz, Becky here....Are you thinking of going to the Texas workshop or to the one closer to you?

Just checked out Riana's website again. The workshop that is in April, in Minnesota, is a mosaic workshop. The next sculpture workshop she has is at her studio in Beldenville, Wi and is on June 14 & 15. I map quested the distance from where I live and it is about 136 miles with an estimated time of 2 1/2 hours! I am REALLY interested in going.. to actually see her gardens and all her folk art. Check out her web site that Slow mentions....

  • texaswild

Can hardly believe it myself. It's been a long time coming. I'm as ready as I'll ever get. Did a lick and a promise on dusting out my house, so you'll need dust masks here instead of at the workshop. My DD is bringing Riana in on Wednesday afternoon. Sheila, Jan, Riana and I w/be setting the room up Thursday morning around 10ish, and I'll get the supplies delivered to the room right after lunch. Thanks for the offer, but don't need anything but your sweet selves. Don't forget to bring your art entries for the show. Oh, BTW - CRACK: Don't forget to bring your blow up bed. People w/be arriving at my house from 4:00ish on up 'till 7:00ish on Thursday for dinner. I'll be at the airport for you, BAMA. There was a nice article in the Texarkana Gazette about the workshop, so hope it draws some lookers for the mosaic art show. Weather forcast for Thursday is 76 and partly cloudy.

Hey - cool, BAMA. I bought several copies from the Gazette. He is a good writer, and wrote it as it happened. Said he'll try to get to the workshop. I need to send him an email telling him to make it the second day so we'll have more to show him. Oh, BTW - LADY asks - via email - if we can bring more than one entry. Definitely. Increases your chances of winning and makes the prize money more.

You girls have tons of fun. Everyone who isn't going is really green right now.

Only 1 more sleep!!! (yeah, like THAT's gonna happen)
It's gonna be one of those nights where I keep looking at the clock. I'm too excited to sleep!
A friend gave me an old hard shell suitcase to tote my mosaics in. I feel better about taking them now. I've seen how beat up suitcases can get!

  • texaswild

I feel the excitement rising in all of us cuz I'm just as excited as y'all. BAMA - I got the dinner covered. The more participants that join at the last minute just cuts down on the size of portions a bite or two, so not to worry. I've been taking Tylenol PM to sleep for weeks - it works. ANNIE is on the road already, and my DD picks Riana up at DFW in two hrs, and w/be here for a late lunch and dinner tonight. Gotta get crackin' and COOK SOME MORE!!!

OHMYGOODNESS - Just saw on the news that 200 flights have been cancelled cuz of inspection problems. BAMA - check your flight info cuz American Air was mentioned. Haven't heard anything negative from Riana, so I assume she's landing in less than 30 min. SCAREY!!!!! CALAM - we'll take pics, for sure.

Ok. The problem is with MD-80 planes.. something about they have to check how the wiring is attached in all of them. They will be putting them back into service as they finish checking them.
Soooo, I look up which aircraft I'm scheduled to go on and wouldn't ya know it? Yep, it's an MD-80 from Raleigh to Dallas. There's nothing on AA's site about delays or cancellations though. But I did sign up for flight updates to my cell phone.
Maybe I should start hitchen??? LOL!!
Slow, I'm emailing you my phone #.

    Hi Everyone!

I'm not a regular on Garden Web, but I check in every 3 months or so and enjoy all the wonderful things I see here. You all are so talented and have such gorgeous stuff.

I am so excited to see Riana is going to be in Texarkana! Betty, is she going to be at your house?? That is so great. The timing would never have worked for me this year, but I would have loved to come see your house AND take another class from Riana.

I took her class at her home/garden the summer of 2007. I think someone already posted the link to the photos, but I'll do it again at the bottom just in case. Her garden is GORGEOUS, and you should see it if you ever get a chance. It's around 1.5 hours east of Minneapolis/St. Paul - not terribly far off the freeway - so it's not too difficult to get to.

There are a few things I would add to the list of supplies. Someone might have already mentioned these things. Sorry if I'm repeating.

SAFETY GOGGLES. That steel lath is very sharp and it flies when you snip it. Plus, you're weilding it around and it really has a mind of its own. I was truly surprised no one lost an eye. LOL

Gloves - well, I wouldn't have worn them even if I had them with me - I like to be able to easily feel what I'm doing - however - I got 15!!! cuts on my hands. (mostly little, but still!) I think I got the first 14 in the first hour. It takes a bit to get used to the lath, but eventually you'll stop hurting yourself. :-)

The final thing I would have available is vinegar. You can wash and wash and wash and use lotion, but your hands will be a mess (unless you wear gloves) until you rinse them with vinegar. It's amazing the difference it makes.

However - brace yourself - vinegar on 15 cuts was not fun. It was worth it though. My hands were way better after a rinse.

Have a blast all of you! I am so excited to come back and read all about this. WHAT FUN you'll have!

WOW! that is all I can say. I have not been on this site for a very long time. I hang out in the Junk Garden site somtimes. I have a big first time mosaics project I'm working on, just getting my tiles together. Was looking at differnt things on the web and always came up a porn site, NOt a good idea at work. Then how silly of me, I needed to go to my Garden Web. And Gee found out all the info about what some of you are about to take place this very weekend, I just could not go back to work after till I finished reading all the info. You can really paint me Green. I would have loved to be there learning for all of you. I just wanted to tell you have a safe and wonderful time. I too will be wanted to see pictures and hear all the storys of you lovely ladies. Thank you all for sharing. Maybe we can get one here in Indiana

I feel like a kid getting ready for camp, putting my last name on everything. (DH wants to be sure to get "his" tools back! I figured it will also be a help to Betty if anyone leaves anything, to know who to contact.) My mom had a good idea also...she suggested taking a photo of all your tools and having the photo with you, so when you pack up to (sniff!) go home, you can make sure you leave with everything you brought. I suppose a written list accomplishes the same thing, but I took a pic anyway. Just one more hope-I-sleep! I'm going to take drugs...

All is well here - we've had a wonderful afternoon w/Riana and my DD and her fiancee w/a few 'ritas. Cocktails, a walk around the house and gardens, dinner, ate outside in candlelight, dishes in the dishwasher w/the help of DD, Riana is off to bed and I'm winding down, answering emails etc. soon to plop in bed to rest up for a very busy day tomorrow and beyond. Y'all are gonna LOVE Riana and this workshop. Just read BAMA's email and got her phone message. She'll join the party late, but she'll be wined and dined even though a bit late.

Hey yall! yes I made it ok. Got here about 9pm.

Today was our first class with Rianna. Boy, we are learning so much. It's harder than I thought it would be. The metal lath can be very sharp, some folks have gotten some good cuts! You should see some of the projects folks are working on. Roni is making a strawberry!! Looking very neat! Roni's mom is making an angel. The rest of us are making head planters/sconces.
You should see the mosaic pieces brought in for the show. WOW!! I can't wait to show you pictures!!

And by golly, you wouldn't believe Slows house. Amazing..words can't describe it...

Wish yall were here with us!!
