Unless it is non-porous, it strike me as a cleaning nightmare.

I thought about this but didn't like the combination of chalk dust and cooking food. Kept the chalkboard elsewhere in the kitchen! But it's a fun idea.

I'm with Mabeldingeldine... My first thought was grease on a chalkboard is not a good mix. And Waterdamage makes a good point, too, about chalk over the food. It does look better than I expected, though. It's a sharp looking kitchen.

I find it a little hard to believe that this backsplash really functions as a chalkboard. I just recently went through a lot of message board experimentation using chalkboard. Real chalk is a mess. Chalk ink needs damp cloths to remove, and wouldn't completely come off chalk paint. Grease totally messes it up.

You could do something that would give you the same effect, without the worry about the grease and cleaning. I used 13X 13 black smooth slate-like porcelain tiles for a decorative strip around my range hood. I hadn't intended it...but it turns out they work just fine as the ocassional chalk board. And they would certainly clean up fine. I know some folks have suggested keeping your BS light...but fwiw, assuming the room gets a lot of natural light, I have rather liked the darker choices.

I personally wouldn't worry too much about chalk dust either...unless you plan to frequently draw murals and erase them with a dry eraser.

I didn't really intend to do a chalkboard unless it was temporary while I figure the bs thing out. Grease wouldn't be a concern for me anyway as my range is in my island. I wish the GW decorators could all come over for a decorating session at my house. :)

I wonder if that's a real chalkboard or just a recipe painted onto the gray paint. I kinda like the dark look of that kitchen, at least what I can see. The range seems a little bright for it, but maybe that's because the flash caught it.

i think chalk boards look great. in magazines.

The website that features this mentions dust-free chalk.
    ???

Chalk is made of dust, as far as I can tell. But we love our kitchen chalkboard, both DD's section and the grown-up section.

    You can write on glass....
Melissa - recognize the Pewabic tiles - who makes your field tiles and what is the color...
    Thanks

Hi a2gemini...they're Motawi, not Pewabic (same idea though!)
the field tiles are Ann Sachs Capriccio in soft gloss yellow. It's a yellow that's quite a bit on the tan side.

Jkoebnick, not sure where the chalkboard backsplash thoughts are going for you, but I loved the non traditional idea that had a kick of fun to it, and, at least in the pics you posted, some chic bistro feel as well.

LOL - I thought it was kind of cool. It does have a bistro feel. I was pulling my hair out looking for a backsplash idea when I came across it. It is non-traditional...kind of like me. :)

Melissastar - oops, I actually knew that but was tired and wrote down the wrong name.
Our new Children's hospital has Pewabic and a friend of mine's kitchen is in the Motawi catalog...

I am thinking the Ann Sachs might look good in my kitchen. If you have time, take a look at my backsplash HELP!!

JK - still think tempered glass would be a great "chalkboard"
    Thanks

Not only a cleaning nightmare, but WHY? Unless you have only one favorite recipe that you want to lacquer in place because even though it's a favorite, you don't remember how to make it.....

The site you eventually get to says no-dust chalk - does that mean chalk paint?

Jkoebnick...sounds like the chalkboard is calling your name... :-)

OT: I'm sorry, but I keep reading "Jkoebnick" as "JoeToekick." :)
