Bowling balls SCORE

I scored 6 bowling balls today! I got them free from the bowling alley, they were going to be thrown out. I already drilled through the middle of one, it's going to be a fountain. I'm still brainstorming, I have several ideas. I don't know exactly what I'm going to do with them, but I know I'm going to have lots of fun! There are only 5 in the pic, I gave one to my mom.

Good score, FREE is GOOD! What did you use to drill through it with? I have several and thought of making a bubbler fountain too, but don't know what to use! Jennie

Well I had them in the car still, so I ran over to my parents' house & my dad helped me. He's got a drill press & we used a really big drill bit (1 inch). It was easier than we thought. I had no idea what was in the middle of the bowling ball, turns out to be some kind of plastic or resin type material that wasn't very hard to drill through. You could do it with a regular drill if you have a large enough bit, but it would be more difficult. You'll also need someone to hold the ball still & be very very careful. My dad was holding the ball steady & he was wearing heavy gloves just in case.

When I told my husband this morning that I was headed out to the bowling alley to get some BBs, he gave me a really funny look. He wanted to know what the heck I'm going to do with them. I told him just wait & see. He scoffs now, but he always likes my projects in the end.

I learn something every day. Today I learned how to drill through a bowling ball. I also learned it's fun driving over speed bumps with a box of bowling balls in the car. LOL

LOL - I can just imagine your speed bump experience. I wouldn't even attempt drilling a BB. W/those all lined up like that I think it would be neat to make a fountain by stacking them all up.

Hurray for you!!! Seeing theme lined up like that reminds me of a catipillar someone made. She spray painted them all, orange I think. Then she added antenni, leggs and painted on a face. It was awsome.

Slow, It's very handy having a Dad with a workshop full of tools. At first he didn't think we could drill through it. But I'm extremely stubborn. I knew it could be done. I figure they drill the finger holes, so I knew bowling balls are drillable. Plus if we ruined one trying, no big deal, I have 5 more! Fortunately Dad has the drill press & a set of extra long drill bits. I thought about stacking 3 for a fountain. Drilling through the EXACT center isn't easy. The one I've drilled is very close to center, but not exact. This is fine for a one ball fountain, but if I did several stacked (with copper tubing through the hole) the tower 0' balls would look a bit off kilter. Don't worry, I'm scheming up something else.

Cool ! Bowling alleys are always giving away their old junky balls. I would love to drill a hole through a couple - mosaic them and slide them over a pole so they look like they're balancing. They'd look funny right next to my tipsy pots LOL

Great score GIN-GIN! Love your idea of a bubbler. I have a couple BB's and love TMG's idea of a tower. This definitely go on my "to do" list. And I have a drill press of my own! At some point I thought it was a MUST HAVE.
