Expansion question

I am finally nearing the end of what has turned out to be a year-long project. I have built a combo planter/fountain using bricks and mortar. It has a cylindrical center fountain with 2 rectangular planters coming off each side. My final step is to mosaic the top (showing) part of the cylinder with 3/4 vitreous glass tiles. I've decided to go the mesh route. I recently read something about needing to allow for expansion. I live in central Florida, so I suppose with the whomping heat we get here in the summer expansion might well be a problem. My question: how do I allow for that? I am completely clueless!

never heard that and i live in central fl. up north had to worry due to freezing and warming up but did not think it would be a problem here...barb

Michelle, Your project sounds very interesting. I just moved from Orlando a year ago and now live in St. Augustine which is quite a respite from the hustle bustle of Orlando.

I can't answer your question either but I do have a suggestion. The Crealde Art Center (Winter Park) just made a mosaiced wall in Winter Park with the assistance of many school children. You could probably contact them for some advise. I hope you will share your findings with us all because there are a few of us Floridians on this forum. Welcome!

Don't live in FL, but our TX heat can be brutal. Haven't had any trouble with the heat expanding my outdoor mosaics. I agree that this is probably something that folks in areas with severe freeze/thaw cycles have to contend with more than we do.

Welcome! Can't wait to see pics of your work, both now and as it progresses...sounds like a wonderful undertaking!
