Some inspiration for a cheap find???

Hi all!

Hoping you can shed some of your creativity to me today! I'm leaving just now to pick up this lovely cast iron side table (about 3ft in diameter) for $25! The glass top is missing so I thought this an excellent project for mosaic tiling! Other than tiling our downstairs, I don't have any experience in mosaic but have lots of grout, tile cutters, etc and tons of exuberance to boot!

Guess my 1st question would be what sort of support base should I start with to attach the tiles to?

Any advice/comments/inspiration you can send my way would be most welcome! Thanks in advance and I'll be sure to post picts as I go along.

Wow, that's beautiful. You base will depend on where you want to use it. In side wood is ok. For outside, glass or backerboard

You are stealing that table...good for you!
Why don't you use glass and do a GOG?
This is a pretty big job for a first mosaic,
you might want to make something smaller
(a trivet or picture frame) just to get the
feel of it. Just my 2 cents worth.

Thx for the feedback. I'm going to go for it and do GOG. I will most likely start out w/a white picture framed mirror (also a steal at 6$!) to get my feet wet on mosaic tiling. I ordered some glass tiles online, can't wait to get started!

Welcome, JAY: That's a fabulous table, and I like your idea of a GOG. Be careful w/it afterwards, that it doesn't slide off your base. You might want to attach it to your base.

Wow! That's a lovely table! I'd love to have a piece like that. Yep, GOG for sure, and ME I'd use a bunch of crash glass, and put a light under it!

What SLOW said about attaching it, Yeppers also! We saw a GOG tabletop hit the floor this past weekend, very sad (but fortunately repairable in this case). Don't let this happen to you!
