Well, I don't see a thing wrong with either. Love the colors you used in the birdhouse and I like that the gems around the edge of the bird bath pick out the colors in the shards you used.

Now I just may have to take on my watering can project using (gulp) broken plates. I've never tried to make something using plates but I do have some beautiful plates and a tile snipper.

The birdhouse has different levels. All of the birdbath tiles except for the green are tiles with fruit on them. I got a whole crate of them for $15.00.

Daisyme, thanks. You are starting to make me feel brave so I just may have to tackle the dreaded plates.

CAROL: Plates aren't difficult. I see you have a tile nipper. Wish you had the wheeled nipper but a tile one w/work too. Just barely go into your plate edge and nip it. On the wheeled nippers you aim your wheels straight across the plate, then half the halves, then half the quarters. Then nip off the footer, and nip the edges into nice little wedges, then crosswise if you want them smaller. Or, the easiest way is take the old hammer/towel and do your stuff. LOVE that different leveled BH.

slowmedown, I think my DH has some wheeled nippers. I am going to practice on a dollar tree plate. I think the outside edges will be the hard part.

If I do a galvanized watering can then can I use thinset? I want it to stay outside so should I do anything special besides seal it several times?

Oh, boy. Those $store plates are the toughest in the WORLD!!!, especially the lime green ones. Even my tile saw labors on those. Oh, and here I go again on adhesives. I was just thinking yesterday about mosaicing my watering can, but wondering if thinset would work since I am OFF GE II. On my first mo on metal, it was a spade, and I used Gorilla Glue. I made such a mess of it cuz I didn't understand about how it expands. I vowed never to use it again, so IF I mo anything metal again, I suppose I'll try the thinset as an experiment. It sticks well to glass, so I'm supposing if I sand the metal, it should stick to that. We'll see.

I googled using thinset on metal and one person says this:

Thinset mortar is best used on cement, backer board, wood, and terra cotta surfaces. It bonds well with most porous surfaces. Do not use thinset on glass or metal surfaces as it will not adhere. This is the ideal adhesive for concrete stepping stones.

Interesting! I used thinset on my "Duck Family - slick glazed ceramic, and used lots of glass in "Shea's Tower", and lots of glass in all my other outside mosaics, and nothing has fallen off yet - in more than three yrs. Guess I'll have to experiment. I might add a little glue to the mix too.

This person I quoted may not know what they're saying. Someone said if you prime it or paint it it sticks better but if thinset worked for you then it should work fine.

I would think that sealing it very well is the most importatnt part.....but I'm very new to this.
