microfiber sofas durability etc?

I searched the forum but many of the comments were about microfiber cloths to clean with.

I am wondering how does it wear for upholstery? I see it on couches and would of course love something durable- I have never lived with it- would love to hear real life experience with it.

Does it stretch out? Does it clean as easily as they say( I notice lots of it on sofas in VERY light solid colors).

Please share your wisdom.

I never owned any but know a couple people that do. Do you have any animals? They all complain cat and dog fur sticks to them horrible, My aunt allowed her dog on the furniture and there's a wear mark on the arm where he would always rest. Another person I know, the material on both the couch and loveseat look loose. No longer pulled tight and fitted like it should be. Both of these people own red ones. I know someone else who has a neutral brown set, they have no animals, no small children and there's still looks very nice after a couple of years. Maybe it also depends on the brands? Not all microfiber is created equal?

I think they're comfortable as all get out but will never own one myself because of the reasons listed above.

I have a microfiber loveseat and a mini pug, not a good combination. His hair really sticks to it and it seems to attract it. As far as durability it still looks pretty good but not as good as my slipcovered couch. It is a light sage moderately priced loveseat. Just because of the pet hair thing I would not purchase microfiber again.

BTDT. We have a pug and two cats and pet hair stuck to it like glue. Ours was a red one and we had the same issue regarding the fabric "loosening". I would hope it's coincidental LOL, but who knows? There might be something to it. I would never have microfiber again. We recently purchased a Clayton Marcus sectional in a chenille fabric and the pet hair doesn't stick to it easily. Just a quick once over with the Pledge pet hair roller and voila!

Well I am glad I asked! We have 2 dogs (big sheddy ones) who are not going to go in the room but still I know our clothes and such carry the hair with them so I guess I would be miserable with microfiber. Will definitely check into chenille. (Currently have denim and have had plain cotton - both are fine with pet hair, but wore out for different reasons- but did not look dirty)

sheilaaus. . . I have to add my 2 cents worth here. I have a micro fiber chair and ottoman, and a chennile sofa. I have to say the chair is soooo much easier to keep clean/hair free. I have two pugs and a rottweiller, the chair is so easy to wipe clean or use a fur fighter on it. I can also just brush it off using my hand, where as the sofa, it is never NEVER free of hair, there is no way to get all those tiny pin hairs off of it. I also like the fact that the MF can be washed and most everything comes up with plain water. My grandson wrote on my chair with an ink pen, I used a damp cloth and it came up.

The other posts may have had a different kind/quality of MF, but after almost 4 years and using it everyday (and not a frequent vacuumer) I swear by mine and will get a sofa in the same.

I can't speak for animal hair since I don't have pets, but I do have kids! We've had our light tan microfiber sectional for about 6 years and it looks great. We did have a factory scotchguard like treatment put on it when we purchases, so maybe this has helped. I would put money down to see if anyone could find any stains. You name it, it's been on it: wine (red!! my fault this time!), greasy food, tomato based foods (sauces, salsas, etc.), spit up and vomit (breast milk and formula), pen marks, markers.......

    Hello everyone,

I have been busy and just thought I would stop by. I have a microfibre sofa and loveseat, that I purchased 2yrs ago at Macys. It is off white and have a velvet texture.
I have two cats, a husband and myself. I live on this sofa at night. My cats love it. One cat in particular sits on the same pillow day in and day out. Yes, it accumulates hair, but one swipe and it is off. As for stains, I had spots from Jello and it wiped off easily with just water. Every so often, I run a damp cloth across it, and it is back to perfect. I never believed in all the hype, but I do now!

I think there may be different qualities of microfiber. I've gotten a lot of fabric samples from different stores, and some of it is definitely thicker than others... Most of it is that suedey-looking stuff, while a few have either a kind of herringbone pattern, or (my favorite) a thin diagonal stripe like a twill.

I laid the samples across the arm of my current sofa so that my cats could lay on them and I could see how bad the hair situation would be. This is FAR from a scientific test, but what I've found is this:

The most expensive microfiber was "UltraSuede" - it was the WORST with cat hair. The stuff does NOT brush off.

The suedey ones were a little better, but not great.

The herringbone ones were great at camouflaging the fur, and the brush-off wasn't bad. I've seen this type of fabric at a lot of different furniture stores.

The Doss fabric (thin diagonal stripe) seemed also to be pretty good - the lighter colors camouflage the hair better than the darker colors. (So what am I getting? A dark chocolate brown. Sigh.) I've seen this at Room & Board, Crate & Barrel, and even on one sectional in Macy's.

There is another fabric similar to the Doss, but with a zig-zag pattern. It's kind of cool - I think I'm going to use it (in light spring green) on the chair. This is from Crate & Barrel.

Hope this helps. Good luck, Sheila!

My daughter and dad each have a microfiber sofa. Both have pets, too, but shorthairs. The fabric on each is of a grainy texture, not the smooth microfiber that many think about. You wouldn't even believe that it was, in fact, microfiber. These pieces have held up remarkably well without the stretching. My daughter's kids have spilled and every other mishap imaginable. She spot-cleans it with vinegar with great success.

I did lots of research before buying my microfiber sofa and chair. Microfibers come in all different thicknesses and qualities. Some are very inexpensive while others can be quite costly. Some attract pet hair and other debris while others do not. Most of them are made of polyester and are manufactured in China.

The best microfiber I found (and what I bought) was a 100% nylon American made product from Microfibres, Inc. I can't remember what it is called but it has built-in stain repelling properties. The store I bought it from tested the fabric by drawing on it with a ball point pen and a black permanent marker. Both stains were removed with a paper towel, liquid hand soap and water. I was told that the only thing that they had not been able to get out was mustard. The store also told me that I did not have to buy their spray-on fabric protector if I chose that fabric.

Anyway, I have had my sofa and chair for 6 months now and they still look as good as the day I bought them. I even spilled coffee on the sofa once. It just beaded up and ran off onto my carpet (which now has a stain I cannot remove.)
I think there were a couple of different textures available of which one was better at resisting pet hair than the other, but I'm not totally sure of that.

I have a taupe microfiber from Macy's that I bought a couple of years ago and it wears like iron. It is made by Bauhaus. Certainly not a high end sofa by any means. Cushions could be made better, need to be turned frequently to keep their shape. BUT, No worn spots, and stains come out unbelievably. The worst was when I spilled melted red wax on it, scraped off what I could, then tried washing. Scrubbing with brush and soapy water lightened it and I thought that was the best it was going to get. Over the next few weeks the stain just disappeared! I don't know, I figured maybe it sunk through the fabric and is now somewhere in the stuffing or something, LOL. Don't care, its gone! Dry ball point pen, washed off with liquid dish soap and water. Coffee and other liquids? No problem. It is the smooth suedey type. But I was told by furniture salesman not to let any one convince me to treat a microfiber sofa with a stain repellent, that it can take away the natural stain repellent finish on the fabric.

I have had a microfiber sofa in the living room and no problems at all. I bought it for the family room about 6 months ago and my dog doesn't go on the furniture but does rub up against it and the hair comes off easy with a damp cloth or even my hand if I am no vacuuming that day.

We've had a microfiber sofa in our living room for 5 years now and it still looks brand new. It wasn't high end by any means, but it has worn like iron. DS drew on it with permanent marker last year and I googled to find out that alcohol based hand sanitizer would remove it. I didn't think that could possibly work, but it did and I was amazed. There isn't a trace of the marker left, I didn't have to scrub at all, and the fabric was totally undamaged by it.

DD has a purple mf sofa and love seat. Everything they and their kids have dropped on it has washed off easily. They don't have pets, but my Golden Retriever was a frequent visitor. The first time he drooled on it, I almost died, but it cleaned right off. His hair -- abundantly donated -- came off with a quick pass of a damp washcloth. After about 7 years, it still looks like new.

My husband & I are considering buying a MF recliner sofa, swivel recliner (2). Have 2 German Sheps that w/be on sofa if so desired. Could someone tell me what the best Mf upholstery would be & who makes it? Also, should you get fabric stain repellent or not? We have been looking at Berk Line furniture. How much does it stretch if you sit in it day in and day out? Thanks in advance.
