You'll get more professional help from other responses, but here's what I'd do if it were MY door and MY project. I'm assuming the door is wood, so I'd seal it best as I could w/a marine varnish. No need to sand the glass. I'd use clear GE Silicon II for Windows/Doors for the adhesive, making sure all the edges are covered on each piece to prevent grout seepage and use sanded grout. I would also consider using the black GE II for the grout, and add beads of different sizes/shapes in the black "grout" lines, as I did on a broken mirror shards piece I did waaay back in my early experiments. Either grout w/stick to your glass.

Another thing I'd suggest is to glue your pcs fairly close together so you don't have big gaping grout lines, I say the grout lines are best at about 1/8 of an inch. Unless you use the black caulking for grout instead, then I could see you could use wider lines...Just grab a couple of saw horses and lay that door down and don't stand it up till all the adhesive has had time to cure, the stuff I use dries really fast, like 1/2hr! GE Marine silicone adhesive. Have you done much mosaics before? Got pics???

Just an FYI . . . . Grout has no adhesive properties so it doesn't stick to anything. It is merely a filler, if you will between tesserae.

WENCH: I surely have a hard time scraping it off my stuff when I leave it on too long w/o cleaning. It must have a LITTLE adhesive ability. I merely meant to tell ADDIE that it would be ok to use grout on her glass project cuz it will stick.

I've seen people use grout, mortar, mastic, thinset, and concrete interchangeably and just wanted to point out that grout is not an adhesive. It may be sticky and cloudy when cleaning it off, but it should not be used to adhere one thing to another.

Ooops - thanks, girlie. Gotcha. I'm always learning. In my b.r. project I just tried to take off one of those teensy little tiles I put on for the vine, and that sucker wouldn't budge, even w/the screwdriver. The Mapei stuff I'm using at FIRST didn't appear it was gonna be sticky enough to hold cuz the backerboard is porous, and I was lamenting the fact that I hadn't sealed it w/something first, but it has REALLY stuck the pieces on. LOVE that stuff.

I'm in the process of using wood filler to build up a carved look of a leaf vine trailing the front of my door but as soon as I'm finished with that I'll be ready to start on the window of the door....I'm so excited I can hardly wait! If it turns out even half as good as the pics posted here I'll be happy and hooked!

CALAMITY & SLOWMEDOWN: Where would I buy GE Silicon II for Windows/Doors or GE Marine silicone adhesive (are they the same thing?)

ALSO, I definitely will have some lines bigger than 1/8" so instead of trying to use grout in some places should I just use the black silicon for the whole project?

If you do choose to use the black silicone as a grout, I'd recommend that you practice on a few scraps first. Seems like it would be difficult to work into your spaces without smearing it all over. Plus it seems like it might end up pretty lumpy-bumpy. And then there's the plastic look to it that you'd want to take into consideration-- that would work for some projects, not so well with others.

You can get the GEII at almost any hardware store. My little local one carries it. For better prices try Home Depot or Lowes.

I think Jane is the only one that has found the marine GEII and she's in Canada, so I don't know about that.
