This sideboard.. or keep looking?

I've played around with my console table and feel that a hutch is too much for my new dining room space. I have too many short walls, open doorways and windows. I did like how the console table looked on the only solid room, and I really need a storage solution, and think a sideboard will look good there. It's tight, but as long as I keep it between 17-20" in depth, it will work.

So.... here is the dining room so far. I tried (as suggested) to move a couple chairs away, but the pedestal is making it impossible to tuck them under. If I move one chair to the outside of each pedestal, the gap between the chairs is too much, and the chairs don't even fit side by side... but removing one chair on the far side of the windows.. works, no one can see it looks odd, and I do think it looks improved.

I had a large picture in the shed, and hung it up... not sure if that's a keeper or not. I also have a real dark framed country scene, but hanging it made it feel too heavy.

sideboard

.. yes, no - should I keep looking? Is finish to light, too dark... should I look for an antique or painted piece? Thoughts?

The green is definitely my fav! I think it's the legs, they add an airieness.

Have you tried craigslist, under 'antiques'? Auction house? Consignment shops? ;o)

We purchased a Ballard sideboard 6 years ago when we moved to our current home. I, too, needed the storage, as our previous home was built in 1925 & had built-ins in the dining rm.

Our is the painted white & has drawers down the middle with glass-fronted cabinets on either side. It has short legs. It seems like the glass fronts help make it seem not so heavy, and the things I keep in there look so pretty. The interior of the cabinet is a grayish green which I just love. I've been happy with it. We also have a dark table & dark woven chairs in the room, with light paint & drapes from West Elm which are lighter toned.

Maybe you can find the piece we have on Ballard Design's site. BTW, I LOVE your table & chairs...love, love, love.

I also like the green one.
Would the store allow you to try it for 24 hours.

Can you purchase it and return it in a reasonable amount of time if it doesn't work? That's what I did recently with a floor model of a dining room set (for a condo that I posted about yesterday) and I bought just one chair with the knowledge that I could bring it back and they would credit my American Express, took it home, and then decided it worked okay and so I then purchaed the rest of the set.

I know its not the same with just one piece - but I would like to think that they are motivated to sell.

    PHOTOSHOPPED...

It can't hurt to try and see if they will let me bring it home and return it within 24 hours. I photoshopped it somewhat, to to real scale, but height would be pretty much as in this photo. Picture isn't helping....

    Sold!

Will the stuff you need to store fit?
Maybe some baskets with lids underneath.

I would rather have someone else paint the last one the green color with the top finished in the same stain as the table. Lots of storage.

Your room is lovely please post an after pic when you find the one.

It looks too high for me. Maybe its the picture above it that throws it off.

Do you like this one? Saw it on Homedecorators.com About $479

I like the height of the green photoshopped one (without the picture -- too large). It breaks up the line created by the bottom of the windows and the table top and it's an atypical piece.

EG3d, yes - I like the look of that one.

This morning, with a fresh look - I'm thinking this gren piece might dominate the room with the height? Maybe it's the picture just throwing it off...

I think it looks out of proportion, i.e. too high, but see the link below for a similar looking sideboard in the Young House Love blog.

nosoccermom, love, love, love that one... love it. maybe I just need to be patient and wait.. till one surfaces.

High sideboards can't be used for serving, keep that in mind. I have a high one and while it looks good in the room and has great storage, it's not a buffet.
    I'd rather have a buffet.

Since nothing new is giving me a warm fuzzy feeling, I have been searching, and searching, and SEARCHING for an old sideboard. Nothing surfaced in my area, after visiting antique store, thrift stores, craigslist, ebay, consignment shops... until last night, one popped up on craigslist for $50.. so I contacted them this morning and picked it up!

I certainly have enough projects to keep me busy for the next year, but this one seems fun, and I could use a little fun! So here is my sideboard - needs lots of TLC

I love it! I was skimming through this and thought, "my sister has one that would be a good fit, I bet." and the one you found is almost identical to hers!

Good choice, and so budget friendly :)

Whoa, that is a beauty. $50 is incredible! Are you going to paint it? I am cringing at the thought.

Perfect!! I don't know what condition the top is in, but it looks like all it needs is a little cleansing and wood oil/polish. Good job!

Great score! Really like it pretty much 'as is'.

Great craigslist find! Sometimes you just have to be patient. I know I look at craigslist fairly often. If I persevere and bide my time, I can always find what I'm looking for.

Now the $64,000 question: what color are you going to paint it?????

Painting for sure, top was water damaged and I just finished step one - removing all the bubbled veneer and started to fill it with wood fill. Need to repair the right side foot missing wood.

    Great find, so happy!

Color, grayish blue I think... or blue-gray... TBD!

I love it, love those legs! Do check out Habersham furniture, they specialize in upscale painted furniture and you will get some good ideas. The factory / place where they paint the furniture is near me, btw. Toccoa, Georgia.

You really scored! And those legs and the stretcher design is awesome and the painted finish will be wonderful on this piece!
GREAT deal, and nice fit for your dining room wall!

Thank you everyone! Without all of you - I would have surely settled for something not as unique..

Oh I love it, especially the legs and their connecters (is that the "stretchers"?). Just charming, and I can absolutely picture it in your dining room. Congratulations on this great find!

That's my favorite by far! You done good!

    PERFECT!!!

I knew if you waited long enough something would come your way and it's perfect! And think of the money you saved? Oh ye of little faith. ;o)

Good things come to those who wait! WOw! I am in love with that piece and for only 50???!!!

    Fabulous!

lol.. I was of little faith! I'm so thrilled that I save a BUNCH of money.. and even though I have so much to finish in this old house, this project (which I have started) is fun and rewarding!

Good job, you. At the risk of bringing the wrath of Palimpsest down on me, and unless you really like it, I would seriously consider removing that piece at the back of the top.

I cannot wait to see it finished and in place! Great find. Now, order chandelier # 2 and have a dinner party.

    ordered chandelier # 2 !

I do like the piece on the back, and it really needs to be there (I think) or there is a 1" gap from the top to the back. (the piece sits behind the top, not on it.

I have rebuilt the legs, fixed the top, and applied a charcoal gray as an undercoat, as I think I will distress it a little and let the gray come through. I really like the charcoal color.. which I did not think I would!

The base color is nice but I think you need to antique it, it looks too flat.
I don't want to beat a dead horse if you're not interested, but Habersham's has dozens of gorgeously painted examples.

Wow, you have been busy! You said you've been having fun working on this project, but I think it will be fun to see what you end up doing with it. All those little details in it, like the little recessed areas and the raised areas, not to mention the legs and the stretchers, will allow you to really be creative, I would imagine. Thanks for sharing the progress pictures.

Bumblebeez.. YES! I have visited their pages many times and will sure to go back again for inspiration! Not really sure exactly how I will finish it... but plan to spend a little time surfing tomorrow for my inspiration picture!

Tinker, read you ordered chandelier #2, my personal fav! It will give your room a nice glow~use small wattage bulbs, probably 25w since there are multiple candles, Better yet, put on a dimmer. ;o)

patty, I love dimmers, I'll put that on my honey do list!

Just checking for new pics...no pressure or anything... ;)

Ha Ha cyn427! Me too :)

I do agree about the detail being brought out a bit. Have you tried Annie Sloan's line of paints and waxes? We have a store near here that gives classes and I joined a Facebook page called something like the Painted Lady and they have great sample pics of two waxes they use over their paint. The dark wax really brings out the detail. You have to use the clear one over the paint if you want to be able to better manipulate the depth of the wax detail, but love how it looks when done.

painting.... and loving it so far!! I am using Annie Sloan products, awesome... pictures soon. I need to buy hardware, I forgot about it!

Oh good, can't wait to see the finished project. Did you use Graphite or Paris grey or ??

This is going to be smashing!

    (voting for the dark wax)

custom color.. I'm praying I don't run out of paint!! Duck Egg Blue, with some Graphite & a little old white!! If I didn't change my mind on two sections, I'd be fine, but my top repair had to be fixed 3 times! (I'm too fussy!)

It looks beautiful and it is perfect for the room! Love the color. How did, exactly, you repair the top?

    E

It's gonna be a stunner, I bet! Can't wait to see the finished product. Your fussiness will pay off, I am sure.

Can't wait to see it! How are you liking the AS paint? Does it give good coverage?

I have a space in a local antique mall and paint all my furniture blue, then use a Valspar glaze. Anxious to see if the Duck Egg Blue is close to that color. Now hurry up! Lol ;o)
