I just love this group! I have not had the time/courage to actually try anything yet, but I am getting so many fabulous ideas from you guys! My idea pot is bubbling quietly on simmer for right now. I hope to start a project once the kids go back to school.

My question concerns a table that I saw on Craig's list. I am in need of a new kitchen table, and I found one there with an unfinished top. It would be perfect for a mosaic. But, my problem is that my kids love to draw and do art at the kitchen table. So, I need a smooth table surface for them to do this. Little bumps from the tiles would just not work. Is there some way to mosaic the table top, and then seal it with a kind of thick, self-leveling sealant? I also need a surface that wipes clean easily, and grout lines are so hard to keep clean, so some kind of sealant would solve that problem as well. Am I just having wishful thinking? I think that I have seen something like this in restaurants, where they have old menus or decks of cards on the table top, sealed with an inch thick layer of a clear something, so that the top is smooth, but you can see the items underneath. But, maybe something like that would ruin the effect of the mosaic, since it would take away the texture. Any thoughts?
