I like green with salmon/coral too. Think
I'll wait till I have the walls painted before committing to a grout color,
however currently leaning towards the dark taupe.

(BTW, my DH said he was afraid he would wake up one mornin', scratch his @$$, and he would get a glass cut 'cause I mosaiced him in his sleep! That's how much I talk about you guys and ALL the AMAZING stuff you all do! AND all the stuff I WANT to do...waaaahhhh, not enough time.)

(waiting for glue to dry...I hate this part)

The paint was a coat of Bin 1-2-3 primer
Then 2 coats of Benjamin Moore Eggshell Aquavelvet
(that's waterbased) in "black" 2132-10
It is the most amazing finish I've ever done in paint.
Usually it turns out looking overly shellacked, but
with this paint the brushstrokes melted away...very smooth.
Now it has to sit unmolested for 7 days until the paint cures. Wouldn't want the doors sticking.;o)

The rooms been painted a very dark warm taupe and the doors are done except for grout. I have some black as
I said earlier, but still think it would make the dark
glass disappear. Gray is not an option with the colors in my home, so I was toying with Polyblend's 'Sahara Tan'. It's
a very warm muddy sandy color. hheemmmm? I really think a pea soup green would look kewl. I hate picking out grout.:o(

The wall color doesn't photograph very well...

linlee: I haven't commented on your STUPENDOUS, BEAUTIFUL, OVER THE TOP, ARMOIRE because I was waiting to see the finished product. The colors you're using are wonderfully rich. It is truly a magnificent piece!!!!However, I'll comment on your possible grout choices. I used the Sahara tan on my kitchen countertops and floor and love it. Because it's a light color, if you don't like it once it's grouted, you can color wash it. (But think of the grey grout as a neutral color. It will complement/match anything.)

That is just absolutely over the top beautiful. Definitely, I'd use charcoal for the grout.

Wow - this is a beautiful piece. You've done a lovely job with both paint and tesserae.

I noticed the tweezrs and thought I'd mention a simple tool that saves LOTS of "tweezing motion" on your hands. Take a simple unsharpened pencil and stick a wad of blu-tack or fun-tac to the end (that kind of putty adhesive for putting up posters on walls without damage). The adhesive putty can pick up tiles quite easily and releases just as well. You'll be amazed at how much better your hands feel.

I agree with you that black is NOT a good choice here. But I actually think gray/charcoal would be great. The sahara tan might be good, too.....but I think I would be tempted to take some of your leftover tesserae and make a couple of coasters...and use a couple of different grouts on them...and see what you like best FIRST - before you grout the doors. And the tesserae aren't wasted - cause then you just have coasters that match the armoire...it's a win-win!! maybe?

and from the back of the room, a quiet chant began "pea green" "pea green!" "PEA GREEN!!!"

I'm sticking with my suggestion of gray..pewter. Your grout lines are small, and I believe it would complement the hardware on this piece.

All done! Just sealed it with an enhancer yesterday.

First off about the paint: I will need to eventually
repaint. All though I love the finish, it doesn't wear that well. The Benjamin Moore guy said that I should have used their Impervo paint. Now he tells me.

wench...about the putty, what a GREAT idea! Really like
the tiny pieces look and those tweezers are majorly fatiguing ;o)

Ended up using the Sahara Tan grout. I love black but am not a fan of gray although I'm sure it would have looked just fine. Th S Tan is a medium yellow/gold. It goes great with the orange/salmon/gold of the glass. Here's a
couple of pix. I wish colors didn't read so funny on he
computer. The grout is darker in person.

That is just a spectacular piece. A stunning job!!

It was a fun project to do, except the painting part.
But my DH looks a little frightened cause there's
2 more cabinets in the house that I'm eyeing now.

About doing the drawers. I think that if they were recessed
like the doors it would look great, however they're
flat faced and I couldn't figure out how to do it and
get a "finished" look.

I neglected to mention that I used the Mac glue on this.
If your a tad messy (pointing to myself) it chips off
very easily from the tile tops. But there's no way to
pry off a piece once it's dried down.

It's absolutely beautiful, linlee! You've created a family heirloom for sure! I love the colors! Your grout colors enhanced the whole thing. Wow... I just keep looking at it!

Linlee, If you really wanted to do the drawers, couldn't you try making a "box" by adding molding a few inches smaller than the drawer front is? I think that would give you a finished look to the flat faced front of the drawer. You could then mosaic inside the boxed area.

Linlee, that turned out beautiful. In a way I'm glad you didn't do the drawers, I think drawing the eye up and bring the focus on the doors is just right! The grout color and the new room color is a great compliment to this heirloom piece.

I agree with Crystal, the doors were just enough, the whole thing has great balance of amazing mosaic and restful calm. love it!
