Kelly, the only thing I can offer, from experience I had mosaicing a concrete frog, don't try to put any glass in the folds! I just didn't have enough experience to realize the grout would cover it up.

For the walrus, you might consider an irridized gray from Spectrum. I bet it would look wonderful!

Irridized? Does that mean irridescent? If so I love that idea. The only other thing I was thinking was some kind of gray-blueish color. I will look for the spectrum irridized gray!! Thank you. Was I dumb? Are Walruses even brown? Are they even Walruses? Walri? (What would the plural be?)

So, Annie. I totally gave a generic shout-out of a thanks for that website. But now, THANKS!! I have seen it before, but now I've realized that the man in my town that sells concrete statues has that lady's EXACT same statues. In fact I'm getting one of those flamingos in the next couple months. Plus, I'm thinking about that alligator. Anyway, thank you for reminding me of site!!

OHBOY! Looking at that wrinkled dog - ohmygoodness! After the few different layers of feathers on the tail of my rooster, I don't envy you on the pooch. I'm afraid I'd have to say paint that little sucker up kinda cute, and pick an easier project to mosaic. Your idea on the other thread of paint and crash glass might work, but it would be very time consuming, so........ it's a toss up from me - paint and seal or paint and crash glass. The walrus looks easier, so I'd do him in a cute color and wouldn't stick to realism.

First of all, I think I need that flamingo statue, how do I find one?

Secondly, I think that walrus is too cute! Not sure I would have the patience to do the dog though. Since the shar pei is a labor of love for you, you will probably have little trouble tackling it. (Please don't blame me if you find it to be otherwise.)

Oh, and here's a pic of a walrus. It looks brownish but I like the gray idea. You could start light at the tail and get darker as you get to the head.

You sure are on ambitious mosaicer. (Is that a word?) Can't wait to see what you decide!

SLOW- I'm pretty much settled on painting and crash-glassing. It has to be the exact brown color of my Gert. (A pretty honey brown.) Winters can be long here, so I've got the time! ;) About that walrus, you would think I wasn't sitting here in a dark purple room with a multi colored rug on the floor and a orange walled bedroom, PLUS the best bright red bathroom you have ever seen. It's not like I'm afraid of taking a chance with color. What's my deal??? (Seriously about my bathroom, it doesn't matter if you are sick, or what your skin tone is, everyone looks FAN-TASTIC in my bathroom! Its crazy. When I first painted it, I looked great in the bathroom so I wouldn't put on much make-up. Well, I'd get to school and people would say I looked tired and asked me if I was feeling well! It took me awhile to figure out the magic bathroom! Now I have a mirror in my hall for make-up application!!)
SUN-FUN- I can hook you up with a flamingo statue. You're in Florida right? I'll just mosey on down there from SE Missouri!!! If you really want one, he will have them ready in a couple months (he finishes the edges and smoothes everything out). Maybe we could do some kind of caravan thing and I could take it to someone who is close to me and they could take it someone a little closer to you, etc. Some of us could meet!! (Isn't it great how I volunteer people for stuff. Good grief.) Boy am I long winded this evening! Also, thanks for the pic of the walrus. How fast do you think those things move?!?

I vote for a PURPLE walrus.
I ain't got no idea for that dawg. Too wrinkly for me.

Oh the crash glass for the dog is awesome...it will be slow going but not really. I have done a little bit with crash grass and it goes fast if you don't pay attention to how much progress your making (or not!!!)

I have some of the spectrum grey but not the iridized kind. I think that idea is going to be awesome if you go with it.

I don't think I ever would have thought of doing something like that until I saw some of the stuff other people have done...its great!!!!

Now I think I'll go check out that website that Annie has so graciously posted!!!

I'm w/BAMA on the purple. I quickly glanced at the site ANNIE posted - talked w/the owner on-line when I first started mosaicing - and saw the multi-colored Pug and Zebra, and LOVED that idea of patchwork. That's probably what I'll do on my concrete pig if ever I get to it.

I have talked to Xuan also...she is so nice and helpful .She has become very famous in her area....and sell's to movie stars in the California area.Ca is a great place to get BIG prices for your mosaics her birdbaths go for $2000.00 ,some more.I too think a purple walrus would be great!

Alas, Kelly I am not in Florida, I am in Virginia but lately it feels like Florida. Maybe I will find the concrete statue around here somewhere. Like I need more stuff to mosaic. Although, I have actually made some head way on my list the last few days. Amazing what can be accomplished when kids are in school!

Bama- Purple is a terrific idea!!! I have a small pencil holder hippo that was going to be purple...kind of a long story (but very cute and sweet) Purple it is!!!!
Chickee- How is it going to be slow but not really?!? LOL!
Slow- Wasn't that zebra great?!? And the pug! Her work is exciting.
Annie- That sure is pricey for a birdbath!!!
Sun-Fun - If you change your mind, DH's sister lives at Virgina Beach. I am forced to see his fam...ooops... I mean I look forward to seeing them each year. As nosey as they...ooops...I mean as helpful as they are they would meet you somewhere with it.
