Do I have to pre-treat hardibacker board?

Friend said I should put kilz on my substrate. Not sure if that applied to hardibacker or if it only applies to "board" type products like Loo-on (how do you spell that? It's the stuff we used in the "loo" before we put the tile on it in our other place...but I doubt that's how it's spelled.)

It's luan..a thin plywood. I wouldn't think you'd need to prime the backer board since it is a concrete product.

My bad!! I went to Lowes today.. hardibacker is NOT the same as backer board. So disregard what I said earlier. It does look like a composite wood product, so I don't know.
I think most folks who do back splashes etc. go for the concrete backer board.
That being said, I don't know if you'd need to prime that material or not!

GEESH. I was told they were the same, BAMA. Regardless, I don't think it's necessary to prime. IF you feel more comfortable, just use a water-based masonry sealer. What's it gonna hurt? Quickcrete has a good brand, as does DryLock.

Here is a link to the company website. It does say it's a cement product! In the store I swear it looked like mdf to me!
