I used acrylic paint to tint white grout just enough to soften the color, but it was the first time I've tried it and I don't know how it will hold up over time. I'm sure I read somewhere that it was ok to use it.

Lisa, yes but it takes alot of paint. A better method is to use watered down acrylic as a wash afterward, it soaks into the grout and wipes off the glass. It gives you better control on what the final color will be, rather than guessing on the dry color.

Listen to NT. She is speaking truth! I just recently did this and it worked like magic. Very easy clean up and I was able to play-just a little-with the color to acheive the look I wanted!! It doesn't even take that long to do it. (I thought it would be painstaking). I have also added the acrylic paint to it, but it is very hard to judge what the color will be. It really does take a lot of paint to get a good color out of the grout.

yes, yes....what NICETHYME said. That is one of the wonderful things that I learned HERE on this forum....and it works SO good!!!! I've also used that method to change the grout color in just one section - I did it on my big vase - the pink sections looked too washed out with the sand-colored grout, so I did a watered-down brown/beige paint combo JUST over the pink parts...and it looked much better.

Nicetyhme is correct, but you can also use Rit clothing dye to color grout. I've used it many times, and have been pleased with the outcome. :)

Dittos. I've done it both ways. Frankly I do like coloring grout with acrylic paint, but then I've only done it on small projects so didn't seem to take all that much. I too have done a wash on just a part of a larger project, where I had multiple colors of stained glass, light gray grout, and wanted the white glass to stand out more so darkened just the grout in those areas. Have fun!
