sunshine- I usually seal all my outdoor stuff.

I made a platter a few years back and I searched for a sealer that I could but on it that is food safe and I'll be darned if I could ever find one!! There has to be one out their but I just couldn't find it. I think you would have to seal the cutting board or it would stain.

Good luck...if you find a food safe sealer let us know!! I'll have to run out and buy it!

Food safe? wax?

Lemon oil? I think I read somewhere that it can be used in food areas as a sealant. Yes, I seal everything, indoors and out.

Wax? Like beeswax? Lemon oil? WHere would I find that?

Sunshine, I seal most of my mosaics. I have 2 concrete birdbaths outside that I did not seal.

No matter what you find to seal a cutting board with, you WILL scratch your glass by cutting on it. So not sure what your intent is to mosaic a cutting board.

I was thinking more of a cheese board. Which usually isn't used with a knife but a cheese cutter (wire type). Scratches happen when stuff is used-not a real issue to me. I am experimenting with things in my head at this point.

I do seal outside stuff, just haven't sealed anything inside, so just wondering if I had made a big goof there.

Just recently started sealing when I wanted the wet look on my bathroom counter, and now I plan to seal everything cuz it gets rid of the flat, dull look of the grout. I would be afraid to use food off glass - too dangerous - small chips.

I'm with Slow, I wouldn't mosaic something I was going to use for food, at least not on the food surface. Even a cheese slicer could be accidentally dropped on it, make slivers, then you've also spoiled your lovely cheese. Cheese is too good, not worth it! And with so many many many OTHER things out there to mosaic...! Now, that said, I have been looking at Raymond Isadore's "La Maison Picassiette"...WOW! That man mosaiced EVERYTHING! Including the top (and all other outside surfaces) of his wife's stove, and the bed, and the furniture, and the pots, and...guess he wasn't so worried about shards, and I doubt back in the 1930's to 60's that he worried about sealing ANYTHING. SO...FWIW...

Here is a link for grout sealer that is supposed to be ok for food areas. I guess tile would work well for a cutting board. So, you think plates would also cause shards? I have a friend who wants something like this done so I am researching whether it is doable.

Mosey down to the Glaze 'N Seal Grout Sealer on the attached link. It specifically states it is ok to use in food areas.

Hm...When I pictured a mosaiced cheese board, I was picturing it done with stained glass, or worse, broken china! Maybe done with tiles it would be just fine. I retract part of the assertion of my earlier argument :)

Oh, I meant glass too as being dangerous, but tile is another option. Wouldn't be afraid to do a cheese board w/tiles.
