Instruction needed on cutting the outlet cover hole

The next piece of the backsplash has an outlet. My problem is: Due to the depth of the hardibacker, I'm 99% sure this outlet cover is not going to fit over the prong-holes if I cut the hardibacker so the outlet cover sits ON the HB. Should I cut the hardibacker board to the size of the outlet COVER so that the outlet cover will screw back in where it's supposed to? If so, how dumb is this going to look with a big outlet "HOLE" in the middle of the design?

This is what bubby says to do... turn off the electricity at the breaker box, and unscrew the outlet from the stud if you can see that, and pull it out and adjust it to the depth that you need it be, and screw it back in.

Hazie's Dh is right and also you can buy a box extender to do exactly what needs to be done, bringing the outlets and cover plate out to be flush with the backsplash.
