What is your favorite/sturdiest...

way to plug the finger and thumb holes in a bowling ball? Got a couple of BB's where the finger holes HAD to be made for the Jolly Green Giant. In the past I have used water putty with good, stable results; however, these holes are way to deep and wide.

I filled one of them (left about 1") with hard packed foil, then topped it off with stucco patch (pre-mixed cement sort of stuff that is for exterior use). So far it's been 5 days and the patch stuff hasn't hardened all the way down. Dries over with a 1/8" or so scab, but below that is's still wet.

Anyway, what has worked best for you? Do you think I shoudl just scrape out this stuff, or let it go to see how long it will atke?

Hi Pat - I've always filled mine with either leftover sanded grout or leftover thinset.

I think if your stucco patch hasn't dried in 5 days - you should just scrape it out....

I use plain old wood filler. I don't fill it in fully the first time. Like half. then when it dries, fill the rest up. Usually let it dry overnight the first fill in. Then leave it several days after the second fill in. Has worked well so far. Then sand any residue off the top to even out.

I use hydraulic cement (can be found dry in quart containers at the big box stores). I fill the holes with either sand or thinset or even beads or whatever I have on hand and then cover the last inch or so with hydraulic cement. HC dries VERY fast so work quickly.

What about spray foam ? To be honest - all the BB's I've made - I mosaiced right up to and around the holes. I love the expression on peopple's faces when I tell them it's a bowling ball & they don't believe me. I turn it over to show the holes and their jaw drops open !

I love the dramatic reveal !
