YES I do . Go to a taxadermy (SP?)shop and buy the form. I do not think they are expensive. Hehehe Consider it a deer mannequin. Very big grin.

I have a bead book with amazing pictures of an all beaded deer head. I will see if I can find it for you. Not that you need ideas on how to mosaic it but just to see it all done in abstract beads is stunning. I am sure the mosaics would also be great.

I also did a beaded deer picture for my hubby a few years ago.Tiny beads #22. Took me a year to find needles small enough to be able to sew them down.

I will go look for that picture for you .

I've been looking online for a head mold and they want a small fortune for one. It's actually hard to find a bare mold - alot of stuff has already got the fur on it . I'll get out the phone book - maybe there's a place by me.
That way - maybe I can "sweet talk" my way into a deal ! LOL

OMG ANNIE I have a set of those small three plastic deer. OH MY I know what I will be working on this winter. Think I better get them washed up and inside before the snow flies.

I'm always seeing those brown paper Mache deer around Christmas ( and especially after Christmas on clearance.) I have one but it's small and laying down. I need a head that's in proportion to the horns. I'm still thinkin' !

How about papercrete? Go to the Hypertufa Forum and look at the thread titled "Finished Bears". There are quite a few sculptures on that forum made with papercrete. I have been experimenting with it for a variety of things and am going to try making the substrate for a birdbath to mosaic with it. I am taken with Rebecca Newnham's mosaic work. She makes all of her own substrates using either fiberglass or styrofoam. I have a fiberglass birdbath bowl about half finished and need to get the mirror tiles cut for it. I am moving around the beginning of December to San Diego so am trying to fit in some play time with this stuff in between sorting and packing. For the last two days though I'm not doing much of anything productive. Both of my sons and their families live just north of San Diego and the fires are a big worry and I'm talking to them every couple of hours. We all feel so helpless! I appreciate the kind words from other posters on here. Thank you.

WHat about using those wire deer you see during Christmas? Lots of folks throw em out when the lights start to go out, might be able to Freecycle 1-2 and use the Rianna method to finish the creation....Just a thought

OH Clamity, I have a confession. Three + years ago we moved here. This is where the deer landed off the truck. I never moved them. They are sort of out of sight from the house across the driveway in no mans land. The headboard was standing and it sort of slumped to the ground with the snow. I REALLY should do something with all of it. LOL

CURB's idea of using those a Christmas decoration deer is a fabulous idea. I haven't checked one up close, but couldn't you wrap it in duct tape, slap on a layer of concrete, smooth it real good and mosaic away???

I'm not sure that would by strong enough Slow, I'm not sure the wieght of the crete would colapse the wire. I'd be inclined to put at least one layer of mesh in there somehow... inside maybe? add strength

My brain has been at work all night thinking of how to make a lighweight base. I like the idea of a deer decoration ... that will be plan B. I'm trying to go cheap here ... LOL ... wire & newspapers & tape maybe .....once I get the general form ... I can buy air dry clay and "sculpt" it . Then rigid wrap it ....... AARRGGHH !!!!! My poor brain ! LOL

You're right, NT - wouldn't be strong enough, now that I think of those fragile-looking things. It would be a great way to start the Rianna method, though, w/another layer of the mesh. Before I took her workshop, I just used one layer for the birdbath in my back yard - Matilda - and used lots of mortar in the wire, and it held up just fine, so one layer over the existing frame should do it. Not sure I wouldn't incorporate some rebar in the legs.

Oh yeah, if I were doing the whole body, I would want pipe or rebar in the legs and back maybe.

TMG, that sounds like a plan. Similiar to how Lyndalu added to her vase right? I keep forgetting yours is an indorr piece so you can work with POP and clay... my brain goes to cement... lol

then, hurry up and get it going with tiles and whatever you plan to use on a mosaic!
by the time he comes home, you can have a masterpiece in the works.

This is a fun thread! Yep, I thought about shaving it, AND about shaving the one DH has kept for lo, these many years! He'd miss it though, eventually. THEEEEENNNN I thought, Hey, TMG, how 'bout one of those singing deer heads you get for a gag gift at the sporting goods store? Ok, maybe not. THEN I thought, how about filling that plastic deer with concrete, with rebar in the legs, maybe cutting the bottom of the feet off to pour in concrete with it propped upside down? Kinda like I did my boot, but I wouldn't cut the plastic deer off! Maybe someone has suggested this. I didn't read all the posts carefully. AND it just occurs to me that you just wanted to do a head. But the idea stands. Just fill the head and neck with concrete, cut off the rest of the body. Ya got ME thinkin' now!!!

Kate, those were awesome. I just not so sure that I liked the whole face in gems... it gave the deer a leper quality. LOL
