'Us v. Them'- 'They' def. don't get 'Us'

So I was showing my coworker/roommates the mosaic at the Nureyev gravesite. My coworker/boss who got me interested in this mosaic "thing" remarked "WOW! That's crazy!"

The non-mosaic coworker (also in the "generally clueless" group) looked, had no comments even though I was explaining that it was NOT a real rug, and that it was a mosaic OF a rug...pauses, then says: "That's a rug?" I reitterated: "No, it's not a rug; it's a mosaic OF a rug...made to LOOK like (his) rug...it's a FORM, then done up in all these teeny, tiny little pieces..."

Still unimpressed, and with an uninspired tone remarks...) "Oh, wow. I thought it was a rug"

She doesn't really "get" much anyway...there's usually a loud "whooshing" sound as stuff flies over her head most days...but the response is typical.

LOL a lot of that goes on where I work!
I wouldn't even try to EXPAIN to most of them that I break dishes and glasss to make something else!

Yep - there are definately 2 groups of people ... Artists .....and .....them. "THEY" usually ARE hopeless. That's why we're happy to have each other !

Don't waste your time trying to explain to "them", they will never get it. TMG, you are so right, I'm so glad I found this place to share my interests.

Don't give up, convert! I'm the only glass artist at my place of employment and after making a few gifts for folks there they're ALL collecting colored bottles, stained glass scraps, and odds and ends they think I might be able to re-purpose. Just in the last couple of weeks I've been given 6 beautimous blue bottles, a couple of green ones, and a small box of scrap glass from someone's relative :-)

There's hope!

it's weird when people don't get it but there are a lot of people who just don't create things. most of the people i dated weren't into anything even remotely artistic or imaginative. they didn't discourage me from doing whatever i was doing at the time - they just weren't really excited about it.

my workplace is different though. almost everybody has their own little artsy hobby - potters, painters, knitters, musicians. there's a different kind of appreciation there, for sure!

MM we have the same mentality here too. The people look at something and say oh and might ask a question like, How long did it take you to do that? Then I tell them oh 40 50 hours. They say great I will give you $5.00 for it and think they are doing you a favor. LOL

I think after almost 25 years my husband is finally starting to get it. He even told me he was glad I did mosaic on the TV stand instead of him painting it black. Heheheh

My MIL once told me she didn't understand why anyone would want to take something perfectly good and put glass all over it. I pointed out to her the things I had put glass on and how she USES them and brags to her friends about them etc. Then I decided it wasn't worth it and I just gave up. She recently got a look at my SIL's Christmas present and asked what I was going to make her. So now I THINK she gets it. I think you should at least PRETEND to get it especially when you are related and you know that someone is REALLY into it. (Can't even think of the number of conversations relating to the Yankees starting line-up that I have pretended to have interest in. Yes, I'm talking about my MIL.)

There's creativity and artistic ability (at least a little)in everyone, they just have to find it and USE it!
