I have a standing angel I did several years back, but she's too heavy to use as a topper. She stands about 10 inches high, and has 4 "panels" that make her stand up (2 wings & 2 dress panels)
I did some regular round ornaments one year, but even they were a bit heavy. I think I used them as package ties if I remember correctly.

I was wondering about the weight issue. I have done some ornaments but they are very heavy. I did do some stained glass on the cheap wooden ornaments from the craft shop that came out pretty good. I am tired of our tree topper and was wondering how I could get some more glass on our tree!

I think a stained glass tree topper would be beautiful, but the weight is certainly a concern.

Could you possible suspend/support the topper with clear fishing line attached to the topper and a hefty cup hook in the ceiling?
