Have you tried "Glosscote Lacquer"? You can get it at Michael's or AC Moore in the paint section. I used it on some glass globs that lost their lustre after grouting and it worked great.

It's not for wood - I was suggesting it for her rocks - makes them shiny. Bottle says interior only. It's only to keep the grout from stains, but I like the glossy grout is the reason I use it. For wood, I use water-based polyurethene for a satiny finish.
