Glass Transparency?

Hi All,

I am delurking to ask a question of all you seasoned pros. I have completed one project, a birdbath, which used tiles and bits of china. I'd like to do something that also uses glass. I've been searching all the websites you guys have recommended and found beautiful glass I'd like to use but I'm not sure if it's suitable. When you use glass that is wispy, or not solid, like van gogh with a backing, does the thinset show through and change the color of the glass?

Thanks for any help!

Donna

Yes. BUT you can paint or cover the back first, seal it and then use thinset.

    Hey Donna!
    Glad you "delurked"!
If you use glass that is transparent, yes the thinset will be seen through it. That's not a bad thing though. The color of the glass will be lighter/brighter because of the white thinset under it.
I'm sure others will chime in with more info.
    Again.. WELCOME!

Use the white thinset rather than gray.

    Looks great!

You can also line the glass (underside of course) with tin foil or buy venturetape in silver or gold. All the other stuff mentioned also works. But for some glass I love how the foil makes it stay kinda back lit when you use it. Wow another Donna!!!!

Oh and welcome and we want to see some pictures!!!! Your not a lurker anymore ya gotta pony up!!!!

Hey, glad you came out of lurkdom. WELCOME. SHOW US YOUR BIRDBATH!!!!! Nothing to add to the above advice, except experiment, experiment, experiment. Do small pieces, trying different techniques.

Thank you all for the kind words of welcome. You are all so encouraging and make me feel as though I really can do it! Here's a picture of my birdbath. I took a weekend class at Passiflora Mosaics and came home with a finished project. It was great fun and I can't wait to try something new. Thank again for the warm welcome!

Wow Cadonna that is really striking!!! I love the blues. The plate you used is really pretty. Your pieces around the edge of the bird bath are shaped really nicely. Was that the plate rim?

    Thanks for posting pics!!!!
