hide the dining table, yes or no??

I really need functional office space..

I came across this small table that opens up to 80". I am thinking of putting my desk where the current dining table is and then using this against a wall with a small lamp so that we have a dining table if we need it but the other 363 days a year I have an office.

What do you think.. Yes/No?

The desk is also mahagony and would match this very well.

It's a brilliant table, but I would worry that the long extension of three leaves couldn't be supported without an extra set of legs. But it's certainly a deal if in good shape--- I would buy it!

I think it is a fantastic idea, and I wouldn't worry about the extra set of legs -it has survived 70 years now...! Perfect solution!

Very pretty table and a good idea!

Alternatively, how large is your desk? Could you have an oval plywood top cut that would knee room all around it which you could use when you want a dining room table? Cover it with a long table cloth so the desk doesn't show. You wouldn't have to move the desk when you want to use the room for dining.

I love the table and your practical idea for a workable dining room/office!!! I say go for it! And, please show us pics when you have it done!

I also love the table and it could look great in your dining room and multi-function. I see, also, that it does have a center support leg when the leaves are in.

I bought it! I pick it up tomorrow and can't wait to see how it looks. The table can be used with 4 legs or 6, there are 2 more hidden legs when you need all 80"...

Now I just have to figure out how to hide all of the chairs around the house : )

I'm so happy for you! Please don't forget to show us pics of the room when you've got it all figured out.

I love the table. Funny how I just saw another one of those the day before you posted yours. Had never seen one before and then 2 in 2 days! But I do have a question: what will you do with the desk when you open up the table?

I love this idea. I've been seriously considering the same for my small DR. Especially now that I am sitting at the kitchen table on my computer after getting pushed out of the kitchen proper in order to start renovating. I have a very small house and I need rooms that function. If they can do double duty, all the better!

To be honest, my partner and I are not 'sit-down-at-the-kitchen-table-and-eat-supper' people. We use the table for holidays and special occasions. And, it seems we will soon have seating at a peninsula or kitchen, so we'll need it even less...

I'd love to find a table like that up here in Alaska. Not holding my breath, though. lol

Although they're nowhere near as nice as that one, they do still make tables that work that way. This link is just random: you can get these in several different styles from different places:

We had a smaller sized dining table that we would open up all the way and place a full sized piece of plywood over the top when we had a lot of company for dinner. It was a pain to store, and also a pain to carry in and out. We sold that table and bought one with self-storing leaves. Much, much better. The plywood solution is okay if you don't have another choice, but it isn't the optimum solution.

one of my friends just bought a set of folding dining chairs (to use daily) because she liked the smaller scale. I don't know the brand but they are quite nice looking and have a fabric seat (with plenty of padding). Similar to these, but nicer. You could look further if that might interest you.

What are you doing about office storage?

I think your idea is great, but you should run with it. Put in nice storage pieces that also work in a dining room, and use them for your office supplies. This way, you'll be tempted to use your DR more often, because it will be easier to switch.

Pretty funny problem about "hiding" the chairs, though!

I have a small house and my dining room does double-triple-duty. I have a small couch in there, a slant-top desk and built-in bookcases. I have my Grandmother's drop-leaf table that I use in a corner with my laptop. The chairs all over the house! Two flank the couch, another by the desk, one in the front room, and four more in the bedrooms and upstairs hall. We usually eat at the kitchen island, but if there are more than 4 for dinner, I set up the dining room table and gather as many chairs as I need. I don't use the couch for sitting at the table unless I have a lot of guests and the table is open all the way and there's no room for a chair at the end. In a small house you have to maximize your options with every room.

I love the table you're looking at - very functional and very pretty!

I looked at the site again and now I want one! Honestly, it is beautiful, and what a TOTALLY handy table for dinners as extra sit down space in another room. Fabulous!
