Centerpiece help... please

This may seem silly to you all-- but I don't know what to do with this centerpiece. I bought it last year at C&B thinking it would be great for my dining room table, but aside from the three candles on it, I have no clue what else to put on it. It is not deep at all, just a flat rectangular piece of glass approx. 24"x 8".. Any suggestions?

TIA for your help!!!

Very cool! I think it's a wonderful base for seasonal decor. Now that Fall is approaching, you could scatter leaves in golds and reds over the glass and add some little pumpkins and gourds. For Christmas/Hannukah you could switch to pine boughs and pinecones, maybe with some little ball ornaments mixed in.

Seeing the rest of the room and it's decor would help. Seeing only the piece itself my first thought was to use flat back marbles, forgot what they are really called, to scatter around the candles to add color and more dimension. Or maybe river rock or other stones, depending on whether you like natural or glitzy.

How about some bling with mercury glass vases or candle holders?

Here is a link that might be useful: west elm vase

Ahh. thank you.. The room really does not have much in the way of decorations yet, other than the light fixture and my MIL's old dining room set. We are planning on re-finishing it some day to an espresso (ish) tone.. HEre are the pictures of the room as is right now (please don't mind the lack of window treatments or wall decor for that matter!

Love your chandelier! Mine is very similar but a different finish and a few more glass accents. Since your decor is pretty contemporary, I'd stick with simple like the river rock Justgotabme posted. I also like the fall leaves idea for some color on the table.

I definitely vote for a more rugged texture in there - everything's too smooth & shiny. justgotabeme's on the right track - I would just go out & collect some cool rocks, wash em up & display them in their natural state.

Thanks for posting the pictures gillylily. You have a lovely room.
I missed seeing Jen's post since I was searching for pictures to post. She's right it's the perfect setting for adding so many different things to fit the season or even the occasion. I especially love using natural elements as leaves and pine cones. I use them quite often in our home decor. They're not only free, but give a feeling of calm in a crazy world.

You could sit the glass tray on another long rectangular tray -- maybe a lacquered or glossy one? Or perhaps a white woven or dark wicker one? Or a fun one with lots of color?

Or add a long mirror under the glass tray for additional sparkle.

Adding another base would add a surface for additional items (like the clear glass stones, natural rocks or pinecones or small white pumpkins for fall)

Perhaps switch to glass votives with small candles (even try those battery-powered votives) Always fun for a change! :)

Or perhaps try a long table runner to add color and pattern?

that's not a centerpiece....it's a platform on which to put a center piece. It can't stand alone...it's meant to boost something or thingS else.
Try lining up a varied line of candle sticks...like an array of all different glass ones....or brass....or wrought iron or silver.
Make an arrangement of little old bottles with a small flower or a weed in each....
Line up some seashells and tea lights...add a couple of tiny plants like air ferns or little succulents.
Add 2 more pillar candles and tie a black voile ribbon in a knot on each one.....add a dried flower to the bow on some of them.
You meed more "stuff" on that platform.

I think the candle tray would be great sitting on a beautiful runner, something wider than the tray so that all four legs were on fabric. Something with pattern and texture, even a runner made from burlap, would add a lot. Then more candles, but something with color that picks up the colors in the runner. Fall would be a great place to start.

Remember that most people are going to see it from the view that you showed in the second set of pix - from the hallway. They aren't going to be looking straight down into the glass. So the side views are just as important as the view through the glass itself.

For a special dinner, when you might have a cloth on the table, you could do a mirror underneath, and silver candles, to pick up the silver sparkle of your chandy.

I'm just chiming in with the others in agreement about anchoring it with a table runner. Pick something with texture to it and maybe add a narrow vase, again in white or pick a colour from the runner. Add some height using seasonal branches eg something like bare fall twigs for now, at Christmas something with berries etc. Look for things to give height and texture to the room.

Thanks for all the responses. I should add that the white you are seeing under the tray is just the table mat (my children seem to like to use the dining room table to color so for now, the best way to protect it). I am definitely going to look for a runner to place the piece on as well as incorporate some of your ideas. I am in the process of looking for new fabric to re-do the cushions (which are currently a "dirty" off white- certainly not a good color for anyone with children but we inherited the set so will make do for now..
Thanks again for all the suggestions! When i figure it out will reveal!!!
