Paint color help, please

18 years ago

For the kitchen.

This is the color from the DR - bull nose edges so it would be easy to continue it into the kit/hearth room. It is BM Mystic Gold. How do you feel about it next to the cabinets? Do you think it helps make more sense of my messed up backsplash? (Tile guy picked up wrong tile & did his thing - was supposed to be travertine subways)

Thanks always.

Smiles:)

    First before painting, I would tell that tile guy to go pick up your tile and install it as you agreed upon. Is he still in town? Let him fix his mistake.

  • 18 years ago

    Yes, I like it. It looks much warmer than the original color... coordinates well with the backsplash.

  • 18 years ago

    I just love your kitchen!!

    The pics of the paint aren't really clear but from what I can see, it looks good.

  • 18 years ago

    Dilly Dally, we settled with the builder so it is my baby.

    Here is a over flashed pic of it at night - hopefully alot more clear than my previous pics. My kit is not this bright at all. I also have not enhanced my stone or sealed it? My DH said he liked the color and without prompting him - he said he thought it tied into the backsplash better.
    Hopefully this will help. I am neutral on it - not sure at all.

    Parma, thank you for the compliment. My kit is the part of my house that I don't like. I didn't get to pick cabs, lay-out, backsplash(b/c of mistake) and DH picked out the granite. The only thing that I dearly love is my copper sink.

    Please, please any and all opinions - yay, nay, maybe but could do better, etc.

    SMiles:)

    I like that color. To me, it looks like Lions Mane and I was going to suggest that for you; it's an Ace Hardware color (I think).

  • 18 years ago

    I would do the enhancement on the backsplash first, if you say you haven't, and then check the paint color. Right now I am not crazy about it with the tile, as it makes the tile read more grey and a bit of pink undertone.

    Looking at your countertops, in the very dark areas is there a rusty color? I would think about that, which might also tie into the red tones in the DR curtains.

  • 18 years ago

    I agree with Les. In the brighter photo, the paint color does not do a thing for the backsplash but "irritate" it, if you get what I mean.

    Look, if that's all the backspalsh there is, then I would re-do it. It's not what you chose, and if you have to eat the cost, so be it. Tile is not that hard to do, so you could do that little bit yourself, or go to a tile shop, buy what you want and ask them to install it. Why suffer?

  • 18 years ago

    I think I'd rather see a mid tone from the tile. That will be more graceful, IMO. Looks like you have picked the deepest tone and I think it is too similar to the cabs.

    Not sure how you would manage the transitions, but I really like the green in the sideboard and counter stools. Is there any way to do the walls in green and use the gold in the DR (walls behind sideboard look good.)

    About the back splash. That you don't like your kitchen makes me very sad. (((hugs))) I am building and I know how hard it is to have to just let go and live with things. Doing the backsplash over is a relatively small job and could help you feel so much better about the kitchen as a whole. I know in my last kitchen, the BS was the part that gave me the most joy. I am wondering if you could go for it, coordinate it with your copper sink (copper accents or something) and shift the way you feel about the kitchen.

    Of course, you are probably feeling completely broke right now. I know I sure am. And the economy doesn't make it any easier. But perhaps you should hold off and hold out for new tile. My kitchen is the most important room in my house to me and I would want to get it closer to being right if I could.

  • 18 years ago

    johnatemp - Do you have a better picture of your granite? I liked the Mystic Gold in the 1st pictures, but the backsplash looks like it has a pink tone in your last picture. If the paint looks good with the granite, I would definitely consider replacing the backsplash. What color is the kitchen painted right now?

    Please show more pics of your kitchen and explain the colors in your granite. It looks to be an exotic along the lines of Lapidus but without the blues.

    I'm with amy about the fact that you don't like that space. :( It really does have potential and so much of it is great. A copper sink is something that you should be able to work off of. The cabs are just the color I wanted for my kitchen. Ours turned out darker than the sample.

    Is there any warmth to the tile at all? Please try to explain the warm/cool connection between the granite and the tile.

    I'm sure we can all come up with something that will look great if you don't want to change the backsplash out.

  • 18 years ago

    I love the Mystic Gold color (it's a step down in color from my Decatur Buff.) However, I do agree with others that the backsplash has a pink cast to it. Sealing it will only enhance the pink more. So, I don't know if the MG is your best choice.

    What color is on your walls now? I was thinking that Decatur Buff would be in between your color and the Mystic Gold and might just look good. Also, it has a touch of green that would blend with the chairs and sideboard.

    I have put off tiling my backsplash because I could find a tumbled stone without that pink cast. I finally found a tile I liked (with copper accents), but it's not in the budget right now.

  • 18 years ago

    I'm agreeing with everyone else who said it's not working with the tile.

    I do love the color though and may use it myself somewhere. :)

  • 18 years ago

    Parma - it is lapidus - how did you know????? I never see it around. The big chunks in it are a blueish (spell??) color. I would gladly trade cabs with you - I love yours!!!!
    Amysrq - green was my 1st thought for the kitchen keeping the cabs that color. Green is my favorite color. I am VERY open to replacing the backsplash. I am open to green/brown/ rust colors - anything!!

    I don't think there is any connection to the backsplash to the granite. I will take some better pics of the granite tomorrow.

    I may start trying to take that tile off tomorrow. eeekk:)

    I am open to any and all suggestions.

    And just for fun - I love this fabric & regret not using it. Can't get it out of my mind & have a sample of it for over 2 years.
    As much as I love neutral linen - french rooms that I see in magazines - I am an autumn girl....

    He,he,he...I thought it looked like Lapidus because I'm so anal that I swear I looked at every granite available. It took months for us to pick one out and then at the last minute, the builder's designer told us that ours was unavailable, long, long story :( We then had a mad dash to find a substitute. The beautiful Lapidus was out of our price range but we did find another exotic that we love and it's in your autumn colors.

    If you are willing to ditch the backsplash, the kitchen could be drop-dead gorgeous! It's already on its way.

    I can't get your fabric pic to open.

  • 18 years ago

    Lapidus varies in warmth like most granites but I found an example of a simple backsplash, in a kitchen using it.

    Johna, can't see your fabric sample either :(

    Nevermind, I found it! I remember it too! Here are some color's found in the fabric:

    Parma, my DH knows people in the granite business so we got it very reasonably. We didn't pay retail. Thanks for the pic - I ran across that one & like it okay.

    KMCG, how in the world did you do that? I love those colors - anyway of finding out what color they are????? I just love that fabric - it has all the colors of my house in it. Would love parsons chairs in it - simple white shutters on windows & a rich paint color.

    I stopped by HD & picked up a bronze tile. I really like it with the granite - would it be too much to do all bronze on the backsplash? Another option is to embrace the wood look & get the beadboard that matches the cabinets. I also grabbed a few paint samples.

    Dark bronze tile & paint samples - what do you think of the reddish color?
    {{!gwi}}

    And just a little hee hee - how my little dog like to help me decorate:) He cries to be put up on the desk.

    Thanks for all your help!

    I would try to bring a little "punch" color....reds, greens?

  • 18 years ago

    My favorite thing in the world right now is Palette Generator. Once you have a pic of your fabric on the computer or anything for that matter, upload it to Palette Generator and it will create a palette from all the colors it sees. I then copy the html code of the color and paste it into Easy RGB. It will convert the html codes into any commercial tint out there! Just pick which paint mfg and it will give the color!
    Ok, here are the colors: ALL BM Color Preview

    2144-20 Eucalyptus Leaf
    2161-30 Dark Mustard
    2141-30 Army Green
    2149-50 Mellowed Ivory
    2143-20 Alligator Green
    2148-10 Foot Hills
    HC-101 Hampshire Gray
    HC-22 Blair Gold
    2149-10 Newt Green
    2161-20 Tawny
    2148-30 Military Tan
    HC-40 Greenfield Pumpkin
    2145-40 Fernwood Green
    HC-41 Richmond Gold

    For good measure I would throw in Hot Apple Spice and Maple Leaf Red to bring in the reds in the bird!
    Have fun!

    I added the two reds:

    Since you love this fabric, it should be your inspiration piece! Go ahead and use it! You said you would like it on parson's chairs. Well....do it! In the colors above, think of the Tawny Brown color as the color of your cabinets. I wouldn't repeat that on the walls. And, I'm saving you money by not investing in NEW cabs! Instead, nothing goes with wood tones better than green or gold. From the above collection, I like Alligator Green,(2nd down on right), Blair Gold,(4th down on right) and Eucalyptus Green,(bottom row, 2nd from right). Hoping it helps!!!

  • 18 years ago

    I pulled the colour out of the tile and granite. Maybe one of these will help.
    This is the granite
    R=125
    G=98
    B=67
    This is the tile
    R=166
    G=136
    B=106

    Just insert the red amount in the r and green amount in the g and so on and fill in the target colour collection adn hit start.

    Granite translates to BM Plymouth Brown and the tile is BM Jackson Tan. Johnatemp, you're right that you have these colors already sprinkled throughout your home. Trust yourself, you're doing great!

  • 18 years ago

    My vote for the walls goes to the Eucalyptus!

    As for the backsplash, I think all bronze would be too heavy, but bronze accents would be divine. I also think the granite should be the centerpiece. In my last kitchen, where the splash was my heart's delight, the counter was very neutral. New kitchen (which should be officially be mine at 3:00 pm today) has a very beautiful countertop and the splash will be more sedated. IMO, you can't do both. Since it sounds like you are happy with the granite, let the splash play a supporting role.

    Now, I know nothing about tile installation...much less de-installation. But, I do like the tile used in the medallion behind the stove and I think they could be a nice backdrop for the bronze accents. Is there any way to leave the medallion up there, get more of that tile to match and go from there? This is all assuming you like the medallion, too. :-)

    Johnatemp, come back!

  • 18 years ago

    How weird.....I have not been on in awhile - started posting & this thread popped up!! I have actually gotten somethings accomplished around the house.

    I have gotten a sample of the Eucalyptus - LOVE IT!! Kmcg, yeah, you are my online decorator:) :) :) You have wonderful taste.
    Amy - I am so excited for you closing on your house. Yay:) BTW, you posted a pic of you, I think, your DD's room - I so love that color & how you used it on the ceiling, too. The blue room.

    I had the same thought about the backsplash - I went to HD & got some subway tiles but they had a pink tone. I am going to hit a better tile store in town & try to find a subway to match the medallion above stove & sink.

    I have ordered pheasant fabric. Things are moving along......now I need to paint kit & will show an update.

    Oh I am so glad! I have seen Eucalyptus in a magazine in a DR and it was lovely. I think it will be perfect with all the colors you have going on. Glad you thought to revisit your inspiration fabric! One piece can bring a whole room together and make it much easier! Looking forward to the progress!

  • 18 years ago

    Johnatemp - I love your whole house! I think the Eucalyptus will look really nice!

    Where did you get that fabric?! Can you tell me a little about it please!

  • 18 years ago

    Sheesharee,
    You are too sweet! It is funny, I was thinking about your earlier today - I don't know you except from this forum where I am rather sporadic with reading/posting but you were on my mind today & I think about other people from here when I am out shopping or such!! (okay, that was a huge run on sentence!!) Anyways, my thoughts were......if I remembered correctly, you are a newlywed & how fortunate you are to have such a nice home & furnishings. You are doing a wonderful job turning your house into a home.

    I really love BM Shelburne buff & have used it in my previous house. My sis has it in her house right now.

    The fabric is from housefabric.com. Les actually uses this website alot. I have had a sample of this fabric for quite awhile before I knew about Housefabric.com. I put it aside b/c my MIL said she didn't like it. But I do love it.
    Here is a link for ya....

    I think about different people on here while IÂm shopping too! Sometimes I feel like I just want to call whoever and tell them what I found or ask them what they think!! Nobody else I know really gets excited over housey stuff except you guys!

    We are still newlyweds and IÂm sooo glad we were able to stay with my parents while our house was being built. It wasnÂt what we originally had planned but the building process took longer than expected. It was suppose to be done before we got married. Everything happens for a reason and we wouldnÂt have been able to afford some of the things we did had we of rented in the meantime.

    IÂm very excited to paint!! I really think IÂm going to like the Shelburne. Hoping get that done in the next week or so. Still not sure what IÂm going to do about my ceiling color. Ha this is stuff I just never thought about before!

    I actually have housefabric saved on my favorites. IÂm pretty sure Les found some material on there for me for roman shades. I did look there for that fabric but didnÂt have any luck. I really do like it. Where exactly were you going to use it? Do you have a window there in your kitchen? IÂm assuming you do. IÂm trying to think where I can use that fabric! Possibly my kitchen. Would it be weird to have that in a bathroom??

    How are you making out with your backsplash? I wouldnÂt be happy if they messed it up either. I really like the middle small tile over your sink. My mind is blank as to what youÂd call that.

    How about your paint?

    Your dog is adorable by the way!

  • 18 years ago

    Just checking in here....glad the Eucalyptus and the fabric ideas are percolating! Feels so good to move forward, doesn't it.

    Thanks for the compliment on the blue room. Most folks don't get it. It will look better when all the white furniture goes in....probably about two weeks from tomorrow.
