How much is too much orange?

GW'ers, I could use some opinions on a piece of artwork we bought this weekend. This sculpture is now filling a corner of the house that has been bare since we moved in. We've tried putting tall plants there, but since that corner is in the middle of the house it doesn't get a ton of light. The piece is bright orange and makes a statement - I'm not sure if I'm sold yet, given the other bold accent colors in the room. It's a fairly expensive piece and we only have 48 hours to return it, so I need to decide by tomorrow if I want to keep it.

Here's how the piece looks in the room (it is the pretzel like sculpture on a black pedestal). Part of me feels like it needs to be on a taller pedestal to fill up the space:

There is a lot of orange in the room, but the back of the room is soon going to have an ebony grand piano, which I think will make the room seem a little more "traditional" and will block some of the orange curtains (simulated:)

Thoughts? If this is a no, can I get some other ideas about what to put in this random corner? thanks! :)

You know I love your room. That sculpture is kind of cool. However, I think you may have crossed the "number of orange things" line. Instead of my eye just naturally running across the photo because the orange is pulling it, it seems to be saying "orange, orange, orange, orange" as it scans across the page. Does that make any sense?

I wonder can you find a piece of artwork that is vertical for that wall? Something with the other colors of the room, maybe some turquoise?

It is always really hard to tell from photos if things "work", only you will really know. You have a great eye for this stuff. Look at the photos, sometimes you see it differently through a camera lens.

If you are this much on the fence, then my gut says you are not in love with it. I think with art, you need to love it when you see it the first time. It shouldn't have to grow on you.

Sorry if that isn't what you wanted to hear. But if that answer makes you bummed, then maybe you really do love it and want to keep it.

    I better stop....I'm rambling.

well, if it were mine and I wasn't totally sold on it, I'd return it. How about a small table or cabinet with accessories and a pic above?

With the ebony grand piano, its an oh, yes! somehow, without the piano, its too shiny and hard.

I like it. I don't think it is too much orange.

Because you mentioned that it was kind of expensive--that would factor into my decision as to whether to keep it. I don't LOVE it, so I personally wouldn't spend a LOT of money on it. Although I like it and think it looks kind of "funky" (a good thing), it wouldn't be something I would splurge on. But, I would keep it if it's in the budget as I think it fits the space and feel of the room.
Is it a trip hazard, or a problem with kids? My 18 month old would be constantly trying to climb it/pull it over, although my older daughter wouldn't have bothered it when she was that age.

If you decide against it, how about something on the wall vs the floor--a series of pictures hanging vertically, shelves, a metal sculpture, or something salvaged looking like a door or window. Or a large leaning mirror on the floor (although the leaning mirror wouldnt work if kids may pull on it).

I love your room and think the piano is going to look wonderful.

I don't think it's too much orange, especially with the piano. But if you like the sculpture and you do think there's too much orange in the room, you could always remove one of the other orange things. I do think it would work better on a taller pedestal, though.

If you just sort of like it and mostly bought it because a) it was orange and b) you want something in that corner, then I'd return it. Get the piano in there and see if you really need something in that spot. If you do, wait for the right piece to come along.

"If you just sort of like it and mostly bought it because a) it was orange and b) you want something in that corner, then I'd return it. "

    My thoughts exactly!
You should LOVE whatever ends up living there.

I agree with Camlan and LuAnn. I'll go further and say that it doesn't evoke any special feeling for me. Does it for you?

To me it kind of seems like it was bought because it was orange, even if that is not actually true. I'd like it better in that spot if it weren't orange, personally.

I think you are venturing into "too many orange accents" territory.

But not necessarily "too much orange"

Keep the sculpture, lose the drapes.

First off, you have incredible taste and style. I'm not sure though that the piece fits the room. It somehow seems out of place and throws off the rest of the room. I would hold off until you found the perfect painting. Something similar to what you have over your mantle. It's subtleness helps to balance the beautiful pop of orange throughout the room.

Well, maybe you could lose the throw on the sofa. What bothers me much more is the change in the floor plan. Walking in to the back of the sofa is not an inviting feeling. Would you be doing a sofa table on the back of the sofa?

Without reading any other posts than yours, and actually before I even read anything you wrote, I looked at your first photo and my eye first went to your patio doors and next to your fireplace. Then I read your post to see what it was about. Now that I know you plan to put a beautiful piano in the room, you don't need to do anything with that space with the sculpture. It would compete with the piano and I don't think you want that. Leave it empty, IMO.

Now, I will read the subsequent posts.

I like the art, but not sure it really works in that space. Given the piano will go in the space behind there, I don't think you need it.

With art, you really have to feel it, and it doesn't seem you are feeling it.

The problem that I can see with it, is if you decide to change your accent colour in a few years, what will you do with the expensive piece of art if it doesn't work? Changing your curtains, cushions and throws will be easy but you might be kicking yourself for spending so much on an orange art piece? Just my 2c

I love it, but it needs to be on a tall black pedestal. I'd like to see a turquoise sofa table behind your sofa, & then, well I think you're "done".

pipdog and jeana, I think you're both right that it needs to be on a taller pedestal.

    Your room is lovely.

Pretend you bought the sculpture before you bought anything else....( and put it on a taller pedestal)....would you really have put that throw on the sofa? Or the draperies?
The piece of sculpture is good...the throw ephemeral....the draperies don't look right to me....but the piano will help.

thanks to all for the input! i think the verdict is in...I'm not feeling the art so we are going to take it back. It's an interesting piece, but it doesn't really speak to me like it should, so I think we need to continue the search. I really needed to that you really have to feel the art - in my haste to get this place "finished" I think I overlooked that. I'm going to wait until we get the piano in the space to decide what will go there.

palimpset, that is quite the orange space! Actually, I kind of like it. :)

RRMI, I love the drapes. :) They make me smile everyday.

htnspz, we moved the furniture a few weeks ago. The sofa and chairs now face the fireplace when you are sitting around having drinks. I'm constantly moving furniture around in my house, so I'm sure it will probably only stay this way for a few months.

Interior Stylist and htnspz, the room includes a table just a few feet away from the sofa backed up against the wall. I've tried putting it behind the sofa but it just didn't feel right to me to have all of the furniture floating in the room:

    thanks, again everyone. :)

I love the sculpture and would use it irrespective of the color. I was recently lamenting not having bought a 5 ft high scuplture of an androgynous person made from red-lacquered 16 penny nails more than 10 years ago. I aboslutely LOVED it but didn't have the dinero at the time. Now I settle for smiling when I conjure up the image.

I immediately thought of you when I saw this on 'my' (Maine) Craigslist this morning! I love orange, too, but this isn't a style that would fit in my house.

You have amazing taste and I love everything about your room. Although I like the sculpture, I don't think you need it. It does appear like it was purchased because it is orange. I would rather see a live plant in that spot.

that is an amazing funky table my3dogs!

joanie38, we've tried a few tall plants and after a few weeks there they all look sickly because that particular corner gets no direct light and not much indirect light. I'm going over to the garden forums to see if I can get some suggestions on a low-light taller plant that might work there. I'm thinking it would look lovely in a turquoise pot.

javachik, sounds like a cool sculpture!

Maybe a snake plant or a rubber plant? I'm not a plant expert like those on the garden forums but I have those in low light areas.

Snake plant AKA Mother-in-law's tongue (Sansevieria trifasciata) would be an excellent choice! It's a sculptural plant and doesn't require much light OR much water.

Funny story. This is our first house, and the previous owners left us this plant in a huge pot, too heavy to move easily. I thought it was plastic, and so never watered it. It survived for months and months, alas, but not forever.

BTW I love both the sculpture and the drapes, but as you might guess, orange is one of my fave colors. I think the soft grey-blue paint color really sets off the panels. I also love the owl, and how the white from the case pieces is subtly repeated in the pillow, drapes, rug and tables. What I really like about the sculpture in this room is the modern lines played against the more traditional pieces. I like your style.

I like it but just don't think it works in your room. I love that your room has such a soft, wonderful feel to it and the art is just a little too jarring.

omg, I would totally put a bar cart there. Neatly place about 6 bottles of Pellegrino (turquoise label with the orange star), some bottles of brandy and scotch - leaning towards orange, but not quite so literal. Maybe add an orange tray on the cart for a wee bit of color. Over top I would put a tasteful starburst mirror or a watercolor that has both orange and turquoise.

    HTH!!!

pipdog - what a gorgeous room!

BTW, I love the bar cart - great idea lagrant! It'll give you the opportunity to get some added texture against that wall (plus, drinks).

I remember when you posted about the drapes - the room is looking great! I'm late to this, but I think returning it is the right decision. At this point I think you've done a lot with color and what the room needs now is more texture. Is that a wood burning fireplace? MAybe something sleek on the ground that holds wood (even birch that you won't burn) and some sort of wall sculpture above? I'm wanting to add some earthy touches to it. I also love the bar cart idea. Anyhow, I think at this point I'd lean towards smaller pieces that ad texture and maybe even just hints of orange or turquoise instead of a bold piece. A muted gold/yellow or some of the seafoam greens would go well.

I also like the idea of a small piece of furniture there. Your room looks great.

The piece below might look good incorporated into the room somehow (can't beat the price!). It's small, but I think it ties in nicely with that to-die-for painting you have. You may not like the cylindrical shape, though.

I love your room and I like the sculpture itself, but it does feel a little like it was selected purely on color. That wasn't my initial impression, but once it was mentioned it does kind of feel that way. So I think you've made the right decision to take it back, especially if you weren't loving it. Would you consider trying a small round table like the side table next to your sofa in the corner (maybe even try that particular table)?

bee, I love the orange bedroom on the Houzz link you provided, and the little orange chair.

I love your drapes. I remember when you first posted them. They are perfect. But, not so much that sculpture that you have since taken back. I can see a tad more of the tealish color in the room.... and even more so on that wall you are trying to fill. Love how that teal vase on the built-in wall unit pops right out at me.

No such thing as too much orange ;)

I like it, but you should like it. I agree that it needs a taller pedestal. In my house, I'd just worry that a kid or a dog would knock it over, and I'd glue it in place!

bee and dalma, those photos on Houzz are amazing! I didn't realize orange was such a trend right now. I liked the white sofa with the turquoise and orange pillows and sunburst mirrors - very nice.

that vase is really nice, lori316! I didn't take a photo of my bookshelves but I have a piece of pottery that my uncle made for us as a wedding gift which has a turquoise and brown glaze on very similar to that vase.

lagrant, I also love the bar cart idea. I've been on the hunt and found a gorgeous one from Restoration Hardware (the "Duncan" bar cart) but it has apparently been discontinued. I think it's a great way to fill that space and make it more functional. I've been searching on Craigslist for a funky cart but no luck so far. Below is a link for options - what do you guys think in terms of style -- a wooden one or glass shelved one?

I'm not certain if this is the right size or style for you, but I saw this beautiful bar cart on Horchow.

Also saw this one on Williams-Sonoma Home.
