interior paint colors

I'm getting ready to redo my kitchen and have my cabinets being delivered on Wednesday. Once I finally picked the cabinets, everything has been picked (sink, granite, lighting, etc.) except the paint color.

In the 18 years I've lived in this house, I have painted every room and actually enjoy painting. What I DO NOT like is picking a paint color and every time I have to, I spend hours pouring over paint samples and usually buy at least 4 or 5 colors to paint swatches on the walls. My last project was my master bedroom and I had paint swatches on the walls for over 6 mos because of my indecision.

I was wondering if anyone has ever used an interior designer to only pick paint colors? If so, what would you expect to pay for this service? How would one go about finding a "color expert"?
This remodel is on a tight budget but I want the decision made.

Your paint store might be able to recommend a color expert. I found mine at a BM store. I think I paid around $75 an hour. She had an art background. She helped pick the colors for my main floor and I am happy with it. She did suggest changing out the kitchen color....but we had just had it done so may change it in a few years when we sell the house.

You ought to be able to find a decorator who will charge by the hour and just help with paint colors. I work as a decorator and get asked to do this sort of thing all the time.

Perfect! I just didn't want to have someone come over and spend 2 hours and be handed a $300+ bill. $75 to $150 would be well worth it to have a color expert come and hand me the paint I need to buy. I mentioned this to my husband a couple weeks ago and he was like "you do great picking colors, why spend the money?". Apparently he doesn't remember the angst I have gone through every time I go to paint. We're on a budget (who isn't?) and we don't have a lot of $$$ for "frivolous" (according to DH) things .

Thank you GW, I will now pursue a color expert.

I have used a designer to help with pant colors. Forget what I paid her, but it was by the hour, probably $50-75 an hour. Ended up not liking her suggestions and didn't use them.

Our BM has an in-store color consultant. She sits at a table all day with a line of gals waiting for help holding fabric and carpet samples, granite and tile samples, chips of flooring etc. No charge for her help, but you of course are expected to buy your paint from that BM is you use her suggestions. Rightfully so. You might check if your BM has such a free service.

What I love is the big sign behind her table- "Husbands asking for decorating advice must bring a note from their wives".

Lol Patty, that is indeed a fitting sign. I will never allow DH to have a say in any decorating decisions from here on out. His insistence on our new sofa (which I now love) has caused me an unbelievable amount of angst and a doubling of expenditures. It will all be fine in the end but it's still frustrating.
