Tapestry or Mirror?

Which goes better over the corner cabinet?

For reference, here's the opposite wall

and the sofa wall

    I love the mirror!

Visiting my sister -- and we both vote for the mirror!

Absolutely mirror! I am love, love, loving your room!

I also think the mirror, but I really had to pipe in because I love your aesthetic -- it feels so classic Gump's to me. And now getting to see the "big picture" I really think these DR chairs are right but I'm wondering if there's something which can be superficially done to streamline your breakfront ... hmm.

Oh what a beautiful room. You have lovely tastes.

I like either one, frankly. Love the Klimt with the gold thing in front of it. More soul, to my eye. The mirror looks a bit too "catalogue display" in comparison but it still looks fine.

The mirror- absolutely! It provides a focal point and mimics the shapes and lines in the coffee table. I wouldn't use both the tapestry and the gong(?)--too busy. I love your room!!

I was doing fine (OK it's the mirror) until awm03 voiced the same concern I had. The mirror has oomph and repeats the Asian vibe but does it have the ahhhh factor Klimt's "The Kiss" (swoon) has? Plus the gong, which has the most soulful sound, doesn't work with the mirror. I may have to go back and forth a while between the tapestry and the mirror.

I'm trying to like my DR chairs, but Ethan Allen American Harvest (china hutch/buffet) seems a stretch. I've had suggestions to take off the doors. I was also thinking of using glass shelves and installing lights, but I'd still be left with a orangey-pine country piece that doesn't look like Gumps to me (thanks, rmk).

This decorating stuff may not be brain surgery, but it sure is a lot of work!

    Thanks, all!

You could take off the doors and paint the breakfront Chinese red.

I don't think the lamps and gong go with the Klimt. It looks too cluttered and the Klimt would be better by itself somewhere. I also think the mirror goes best with the cabinet.

Please tell us where the coffee table came from?? Thanks.

I think the tapestry is less predictable and has more pizzaz.

olychick - Chinese red, now that would really be a pop of color! Change the hinges and pulls?

chickadee2 - I was trying to layer (sigh). It either takes a skill I don't have or I don't have the right accessories or wouldn't even know the right accessories if I saw them.

ratherbesewing - It's Annie Selke Collection. I found it at Good's Home Furnishings, Hickory Furniture Mart (NC).

mitchdesj - less predictable is what I was thinking, too.

I really like the form of the mirror and the contrast against the light gold walls. I know the mirror and the tapestry will both be used (somewhere, some time) in this house.

I prefer the tapestry for several reasons; I like how it brings your eye upward, balancing the height of your hutch, the colors work off and again, balance the colors in the artwork across the room and the tapestry adds nice textural interest.

I do feel that the cabinet is too small for those foo dog lamps and gong, perhaps one slightly larger lamp would work better and the gong might be nice on the coffee table.

where is that mirror from? i'd like it for over my desk.

    Love the mirror!

i prefer the mirror--- the shape of it is better for over the cabinet, imo.

the tapestry can stand on it's own. if you do keep the tapestry over the cabinet, i would definitely remove the gong and the lamps...

srg - Tuesday Morning. There are 3 stores within a 10-mile radius and it was the only one at one of the stores.

Is the tapestry suppose to be hung vertically? or did you just do that to get an idea of color? Looks to me as tho the lady is reclining.

I am a huge klimt fan, so that gets my vote. :) I agree with those that said the mirror is a bit more predictable, but maybe that if why you like it there! If your mind always looks for a mirror in that spot, you might not be happy with the tapestry.

In which case send it my way. ;)

Seriously thanks for the idea, I bet something like that tapestry would look good in my stairwell!

I like the mirror set up much better. The tapestry would be nice somewhere else.

    I vote for the mirror.

What mitchdesj said: "I think the tapestry is less predictable and has more pizzaz." However I'd move the gong and lamps elsewhere and use something low in front of the tapestry.

If you hang the tapestry horizontally (like it is intended to be?) I vote for the tapestry. The lamps and gong will look fine to me.

schoolhouse, Just to be sure, I checked art.com- (the tapestry is of "The Kiss" by Klimnt (as boop mentioned) and java has it hanging correctly. (Hope I don't sound like a know-it-all):)

Oh, I see it now nancybee. I didn't notice the guy's arms and hands, his body is all of the area to the left. Makes more sense now - thank you, appreciate the art lesson, you're not being a know-it-all at all. Sorry, java.

I love the tapestry, but I don't like it where it is. The lamps and gong are hiding a portion of it, and I believe it commands to be seen in its entirety wherever it ends up hanging. If you were to leave it where it is and remove the lamps and gong, I think it would look awkward -- a rectangle above a square. Plus, people would be focusing on the tapestry and miss your beautiful table. I also feel it is hanging too high on the wall to be truly appreciated. Is there a spot to hang the Klimt so that it is seen as you enter the front door?

I think the mirror looks lovely over the table -- a circle over a square -- complimentary with neither one overpowering the other -- and the mirror naturally reflects your artwork across the room.

I think the hutch could be painted and with the upper doors removed, it would look completely different. Tommi Parzinger, James Mont, and Michael Taylor all did MCM pieces that were 'asian inspired' but clearly western.

    The mirror!
