Kitchen plan feedback - take 2

After taking into consideration feedback from my first version we have a new plan. I'm much happier with the new kitchen plan. Previously we had a small central island with a large angled island with a raised bar.

The new version deletes the central island for one large island with a counterheight bar. The island is about 10 x 5. The only eating areas in the house are the breakfast room and the bar.

I am thinking that the island is a little close to the refrigerator. It is 5'8" from the wall behind the refrigerator to the island. I am considering moving the island about 6" closer to the breakfast room end.

Any feedback is appreciated. If you want to see the entire plan I have a post in the Building forum.

There is an entry from the breakfast room to a hall that goes to the secondary bedrooms and bath. I wanted a 12x12 breakfast room but it is larger due to the layout needed for the entry to that hall. Another option might be to relocate that entry to the "bottom" of the kitchen. That is, to the hall to the left of the refrigerator space. Not sure if that is worthwhile or not.

If you move the entry down to the fridge area will you then not have people walking through the kitchen to get to the eating area? Would drive me nuts. Unless there is another reason for moving it?

Regarding the aisle between fridge and island - is your fridge counter depth - if so you should have enough room. If you leave the entrance at the breakfast room area then people will probably go breakfast room and then family room via the area where it says 5'9". If you move the entrance to beside the fridge there might be more traffic from hallway to family room that way and then there might be a problem.

This is all assuming I'm reading your plans correctly.

Remind us how many and what ages are in your house/kitchen, and your cooking/baking/entertaining style. This is, pretty much, a one-worker layout with the cooking, baking, and clean-up all sharing one aisle, and the main elements situated back-to-back.

    rhome 410 -

4 currenty in the household -- DH and I and kids 14 and 17. We all tend to eat at different times and have a casual lifestyle. Almost always only one person cooking in the kitchen at a time. Rarely entertain except occasional family holidays or visits. Not much cooking from scratch. Cooktop will be induction. Oven will probably be one regular oven and an Advantium. Very rarely any baking, more likely to cook a meal for 1 or 2 people. Everyone usually makes their own meals with some exceptions (DH and I might eat the same thing, for example).

blfenton - You are correct about people walking through to get to breakfast room (although they will probably eat at the bar most of the time based upon history at our last house). But we will have people walking through any way. That is, as it is now, people will walk through kitchens to get to the breakfast area to go to the kids' bedrooms.

Main reason to move would be to perhaps lessen traffic through the kitchen and perhaps save a little space if the breakfast room could then be smaller (we are about 100 sf larger overall than the max we wanted to be)
