You can't see greatly in this picture, but the glass cab on the end (left end) is bumped out and the cab over the range is bumped out (as is the cab over the fridge, not shown in this picture). I believe our installer said 2" was the bump out. Also, the bump outs needed to be higher (or maybe could be lower too) because the crown has to have a place to end without looking funny. I wanted my bump outs to the ceiling (8' ceiling), so we were fine with that.

Do you really think that upper cabinets of varying depths is the cure for visible vertical seams? I would find the varied cabinet depths much more eye-catching.

The cure for vertical seams is "combined" cabinets. Find a manufacturer or maker that offers them and a KD who knows how. O have done them as long as 104", they are available up to 120". If - they are taller than 39, stacked, have a lot of glass- or longer than 84", then I prefer dowelled or mortise and tenon frame construction over pocket hole frames.

An advantage of combining is the intermediate stiles can be as narrow as 1-1/2" gaining space.
Disadvantages- make sure you can get them into the room, and care must be used at install to provide enough support.

jakuvall, that's what my cabinet maker did - my two longest runs of uppers are combined. One has two sets of doors, the other has three (the middle one is over the range hood). He did the same with the base cabinets on the sink wall - a 9" tray cab, then sink, then 18" drawer stack are all one cabinet.

What Jakuvall failed to mention is finding the funds to pay for a cabinet line that will do that. It won't be found among the mid priced lines.

Actually every line I carry offers combined cabinets including Showplace, decidedly mid range brand.
