sink depth

I am about to purchase my sink (yippee!) and am having the usual self-doubts....

My old sink was a drop-in, 8 inches deep. I found that comfortable, but wouldn't mind an extra inch or two.

My new sink will be undermounted, making it seem deeper. I'm tempted to spring for the 10" deep sink, but worry that this will almost be TOO deep. The sink grids don't really raise it up much--just half an inch or so.

Could someone who has been using a 10" deep, undermounted sink let me know what it's like to work with? I'm tall, if that makes any difference....

Thanks.

I'm 5'8": I find it too deep, and yes, it hurts my back. This is also made worse by the fact that my undermount has a full 5" setback from the counter edge. I have only noticed this recently. Next time (next life) I will go for the farmhouse sink becsue I would enjoy the depth more without a HUGE lip to lean over...hope that makes sense! :)

I have the Blanco Silgranit sink (511-707) undermount sink and love the 9.5"/8" depth! I'm 5'7" and DH is 5'10" and we both love the depth compared to our old sink. Plus we can fit so much into the larger side! Good Luck!

Not realizing how the "undermount" adds another inch, I wish I didn't pick out a 10 inch deep sink. I had a 4" deep cheapo one prior, so I thought "bigger is better". I love how I can pack it full of pots, etc, but I have to bend my back to reach the bottom to scrub pots, etc. I'm 5'4" too. I guess it's personal preference, but I should have picked 8" deep. Any chance you can do a "dry run"?

I have a copper farm sink with a 10" depth. I can't imagine something less since it gets filled quite often with a lot of pots and pans. Since it's a farm sink, there is no "set back". ..that might help... The people that use the sink most (including me) range between 5' 2" and up. Nobody has complained that it's too deep...

I'm tall...5'9". I have a 10" deep single-bowl sink and LOVE it. If you spend several hours washing dishes because you don't have a dishwasher then you might get a sore back. I use mine for washing big pans. Someone else brought up defrosting a turkey, which I haven't done yet but am looking forward to doing.

LOL ... not at you, but just remembering previous threads over the years on the same topic. When I was sink shopping I never gave the depth a second thought UNTIL it was brought up here. Then I started to stress over my decision. In the end ... I LOVE having a 10" deep sink! I'm 5'8" and don't use a grid. I wash some dishes by hand every day ... and always the pots & pans.

I'm 5'4" and don't like the 10" depth that I used at my sisters before getting my 7.5" which is perfect.

Sis is 5'2" and loves hers, but "I" think it's mainly b/c it hides her dirty dishes well. She did mention this as one reason for liking it. She doesn't have a dishwasher.

such a personal matter. for me, being 5'4", I really wouldn't want anything deeper than 8" ... the rental we stayed in while renovating had a 10" deep sink and I couldn't get used to it and didn't like it at all - perhaps if I were taller I'd have felt differently.

could you "try out" some sinks of friends/family... they'd probably be thrilled to have you over, particularly if you'll wash their dishes!!

    Hi,

I am 5"8" and love my 10" sink. The reason I love it is because I'm so sloppy and usually have water all over when I'm loading the dishwasher. The deeper sink keeps my water in the sink and not on the floor. It is also great when I water my plants as the watering can fits in the sink perfectly.

Good luck with your decision. I found it most helpful to go to a store with a bunch of sinks of varying depths and see what was most comfortable for me.

Just to confuse the issue, I have two Franke SS sinks. In the kitchen I have a double-20" wide and 9" deep with a stainless rack that is two inches from bottom. Other side is 14 wide and 8"deep and then the 2" rack. I love this sink-especially the big side that is 9" deep. It also can take another rack higher up so you can drain vegies, meat whatever. I love the rack. I find anything more shallow like my old one-you are going to splash water out of it. In the laundry room I got the big 30" wide single sink so I could soak my oven racks and pans easily. It is 11" deep with the rack again so it raises it 2 inches. I also love this sink but the double for my height 5'2" is perfect. And I just like a double sink to use all of the time. The big guy lets me put big stuff-buckets, etc in it with no problem. I really don't have a problem with this one either with my height. And Franke gives you this fantastic little tube of cleaner that takes 5 seconds to spruce it up. I am ordering a regular tube. I used the stuff on my Miele oven and it is so great. good luck. my friend got the same sink in the material that is super hard-can't remember the name-and she loves it also. I actually went to a store that had the sinks in a counter(make sure it is the height your counter will be) and stood there and pretended to use it. My friend who is 4'11 simply had her counter lowered in her island to accommodate her height.

I'm tall too...6'1" and just got my new sink. It's 10" deep, but I am having my counters made 2" higher than normal to compensate. Should work well!
