Layout questions

Hi,

I have a small kitchen in a 1400 sq ft house that was built in 1910. We'd like to re-do the kitchen but don't want to spend too much since we may move in 5 years or so. The house has original woodwork, dark stain, wood floors and 6 stained glass windows, so very much a traditional feel. Planning on a white Ikea kitchen with Stat doors.

The layout has a drain & hot/cold pipes between the two windows. We considered moving it but would cost a lot with not much benefit.

questions
- should I have a soffit all around the kitchen? Have one on short wall so that the microwave vents outside.

- does the small cabinet next to refrigerator make sense? It's really tall and thin (12x39)

-any other ideas?

(The Ikea kitchen planner has an issue with the drawers showing when they shouldnt)

thanks!
patrick

Can you post an overhead view layout with measurements? It's much more useful. In the meantime I'll respond to what I can tell so far.

I would consider tiling the projection where the hot/cold pipes up to the height of the backsplash to help it blend in with the backsplash. I would even consider tiling it to the ceiling, whether you also take the tile to the ceiling or not.

You don't have a lot of storage so make sure to go all drawers except for the sink base and corner. Actually, I would consider not having a corner cabinet at all and simply butting two drawer cabs together (or a drawer and a doored cab, if there is not enough room next to the range) with a filler between them. That means the corner is inaccessible but the storage you gain is much more accessible and thus functional.

It looks like you reduced the depths of the peninsula cabinets to the right so you could have seating. I wouldn't want to sit in the "corner" so I would probably flip that so the seating is to the left. Make sure to have a 15" deep overhang, which is the recommended minimum.. people take up the same amount of space whether they have an overhang that's within comfortable reach or not, so you may as well make them comfortable.

    Your questions..
    1) since both the upper cabinets and the soffit are completely on the left wall and don't turn the corner to the back wall, I would have the soffit on the wall only. It looks intentional.
    2) That cabinet looks.. alright I guess. I looked at the image first and didn't notice it at all until I read your text. What jumps out at me as looking weird is the upper between the two windows, floating over the pipe projection. To be honest I would delete both of those uppers and put open shelving between the two windows instead.

    Thanks for the great input!

I attached a picture from Ikea's kitchen planner. Also have a link to the planner. (you need internet explorer).

I made some of the changes you suggested. I might change the sink cabinet to 30 inch instead of 36. Then i can make the cabinet next to it wider and with drawers. Or maybe replace the corner cabinet with two cabinets. (Ikea is limited in what you can do).

I'll have to see if i can get to 15" overhang. Right now it is 13".

Here is a link that might be useful: Ikea link to plan
