Staggered or Flush Cabinets?

Hi, I have a small kitchen that I'm renovating - 9'x 10'. A local carpenter is building the cabinetry. The ceilings are 9'. Cabinets are currently planned as 42" high with 5" crown.

Plan A was to go with the staggered cabinet look, with the hood section being raised above the other wall cabinets. The hood cabinets would end up flush with the ceiling. Then the wall cabinets on either side of the hood would be lower by about 9-12". This looks nice on the plan, but throws away the 12" section as storage.So...

Plan B would be to make everything flush at the ceiling. It loses the decorative staggered-look, but gains more storage space. (which would be about 10 cubic feet over the entire kitchen).

Cabinets are painted white traditional.

What would you do?

Also, would the staggered look 'date' the kitchen?

Thanks!

we have a 9/16 kitchen and chose to use 42" uppers and then small crown molding and small soffit to the ceiling. take the storage.

Raising the hood cabinet as you have it on the plan wouldn't date the kitchen as quickly as some plans.

If you can use the storage and are able to reach it then go with the larger cabinets. The hood cabinet will still look nice with the cabinets the same height and you get more storage you need. It does look nice on the plan, but because your hood is 30" wide, ceilings are standard height and your kitchen is small you don't get the maximum visual impact of a raised hood that a larger kitchen would have.

I say go for storage. There are always things you don't use very much that don't need prime kitchen real estate!

Go for the storage as the others have said. Not to mention the fact that if the cabs go to the ceiling you don't have to worry about cleaning up there :)

what my carpenter did was keep the trim all the same but he brought out the bit above the hood & stove area by a small amount so it looks different. More fancy I think

i had to have a thicker crown due to the ductwork behind but this would look just as good with half the crown.

muspic, that looks great! So your center cabinet in the picture is not pulled out or deeper than the others? Is it just the trim that makes it deeper? Are those framesless cabs with raised trim between, so that the middle cabinet doors will be flush with the trim? I'd love to see more details with the doors attached (opened and closed), if you have it. thanks!

Muspic, I agree, that looks great! What a good idea. Serves to distinguish and make the hood area a bit special. Thank you!

sorry for the delay in answering.

Yes, the cabinets are all one depth - just lookes more elegant and richer with that moulding out

    cabs are frameless

    here are some more pics

unfortunately you don't get the true 3d feel

I have two biases here: I'm short and I like the look of staggered cabinets.

I'm 5'1", so the additional storage space would not be a big draw for me--I'd need a 4' stepladder to get to it. I already have plenty of 'high' storage in pantries and only my son and husband can reach them. If I was short storage elsewhere, that would be different, so that is a consideration.

As it was, my mom tried to talk me into going all the way to the 9' ceiling with the cabinets--and I'm glad I didn't since I already can't reach the top shelves.

muspic, thank you for those pictures! I think that is a great solution to make a section more interesting!

Ohhh, muspic, nice touch. I really like that idea; mind if I borrow it? :-)

muspic - love your kitchen! That's a great way to add detail in a small kitchen and maximize storage.

Okay Muspic's idea just got added to my todo list when I trim out the cabinets.

    It looks really nice..

To the Original poster.. instead of going up.. why not pull
one out and couple inches for the visual effect.
