Backsplash trim under microwave

We have an over the range microwave. In order to replace the charcoal filters I have to rotate it down to access the top vent. I am about to install a backsplash of chocolate travertine 3x6 tiles. If I bring the tiles all the way to the bottom of the microwave I won't be able to take it out or maintain it. Any ideas on how to handle this?

I was thinking of stopping the tile about 1" below the MW, even with the bottom of the cabinets. I would then attach some trim pieces with velcro. Any thoughts?
