Question for you all

We are coming down to the last few items on our list. Carpet for the 2 kids rooms. The rest of the house is laminate and we wanted to get carpet in just these 2 rooms. They are not large rooms, I think it is 312 sq ft for the 2. We decided to give Lowes a try as they have a deal for $249 they will measure, install, haul away and move normal furniture.

Well the guy came last week to measure. WE had already picked out the carpet and per their board it was $3.97 with premium pad. When she called me with the quote she said it was $4.46 not $3.97, board hadn't been changed! I said not my fault, I want the listed price.

Well now he wants to charge an extra $40 to move furniture. I told him that everything would be out of the rooms but the bed and dresser. Wouldn't that be considered normal furniture for a bedroom? Then he is adding $54 to 'glue' the carpet at the transition to the laminate in the hall. Not tack it on a tack strip. $54 !

I am about ready to say forget it and go somewhere else, or have DH and our contractor do it.

Laura, that's how they get ya! I had a similar experience with Home Depot over countertops~since I lived in a condo, they also wanted to charge me for parking their truck in the parking lot!!

I think I am going to go over there today to get a few other things and see if they did in fact change the price on that carpet. If they didn't I may just take it up with the manager. Really it constitutes fraud. I have spent so much there this summer doing this house. It just really irratates me!

I would go to a real carpet/floor store. There must be a reputable one locally. It might cost more, but there won't be any surprises and that part about gluing the carpet to your laminate makes me nervous.

Well I went back yesterday and the carpet price had not been changed so I had them honor that, a difference of $300 + dollars. They finally said that 'normal' furniture for a bedroom was a twin bed! Anything other than that was extra! I told them I didn't agree with the gluing and I will have my contractor talk with the installer to work that out.

So I still haven't paid for anything. Nothing will happen till next week as we are leaving for 4 days for State Band Championships, and I am too tired!

Out of principle, I'd walk on this deal...but would be sure to write a letter to the store manager and Lowes corporate about the experience.

I would ask your contractor if he knows any good floor/carpet guys. When we were building last year, we bought our carpet from Lowes because they had such a great deal on the particular carpet we wanted. However, with DH being the builder, he hired a sub to install it. It was much cheaper and they did ALL the work. It was a win-win all the way around! You might want to check into that. Good luck. If you DO go with them, I would definitely write the letter if you are not satisfied with the results. You might be surprised what a letter can do! I have written several over the last year and have received a lot of goodies in the mail, including some companies writing off my balance on some accounts. It never hurts to zip off a letter! Make sure to send it certified so they know you mean business!
