Hidden dishwasher?

We are redoing our kitchen a bit at a time. Wife bought a shaw farm sink, which has won me over. Now the trouble is that it is next to a kenmore dw with a control panel that protrudes to 25.5 inches, ruining the nice look of.the farm sink protrusion from the cabinet line.

I see pictures here and elsewhere of dishwashers with cabinet fronts , which would be nice. Even a dw with a total depth of 24 inches would do. Does anyone have information on shallow dws or dws with a door on which I can attach a panel to match the cabinets we are building?

Thanks,

    Whirlpool : GU2475XTVY 24in Fully Integrated Dishwasher
There are many out there, just Google "integrated dishwashers" and you will get lots of different brands. Bosch has some, Miele also, Electrolux, Whirlpool. Good Luck.

You may need to put "fully integrated" or "Built in" to find ones that will allow you to put in a panel.

I think Kenmore has an integrated dishwasher, too, and all the top brands do. The problem is that dishwashers that take panels are the expensive ones. The ones I looked at, and eventually bought, only had panel ready models for their top of the line.

Panelled DW's are great! You can put any kind of handle you want on it, so long as it's sturdy enough to pull on against whatever it is that holds the door shut, and easy to grip and control. Lots of people just have a knob (the kind with the screw that goes through from the back), or a bin pull. Many have a big, say 22" long, appliance pull. Some buy a pull from the manufacturer, especially if they want it to match another appliance. And a goodly portion have something in between. You can make your panel be faux drawers/cabinets, or you can make it match, but obviously be the DW. Or you can put an art piece on the panel instead (though that wouldn't go so well with the farm sink).

For information about particular brands of dishwashers, features, etc., check the appliance forum. If you haven't bought a new dishwasher in awhile, be advised that for energy and water conservation they operate differently than your old one probably does, and may require different habits and different detergent. All of the European ones and some American ones, use convection drying (i.e., the heat from the water), and perhaps a blower, though some American brands still have a heating coil and an option to use it or not. With convection, you need full loads, and lots of crockery and metal, for it to dry really well. The quietest machines compromise water pressure (i.e., sloshing) to keep quiet, so aren't such big powerhouses in the washing (i.e., not for days old, stuck on stuff). Things like that.

Read up and go shopping. You're sure to find something that'll work well for you and look really good with your beautiful new sink.

IKEA has one now, by whoever makes their appliances. (Frigidaire?)

Thanks much folks. I noticed the phrase "integrated" with respect to dishwashers and had no idea what it meant. More to learn I see....

This kitchen rebuild business goes on and on. I had visions of spending my days in the shop building cabinets, listening to NPR, and thinking happy thoughts. Instead I spend my days plastering, pulling romex, teetering on ladders, and driving truckloads of rubbish to the landfill. Maybe things will get better soon.

Some of the American DW can be a bit deeper than European integrated DW. I believe a few people had trouble getting a "fully integrated" look. I pulled out my cabinets on that run 2" to make sure I don't have any problems with the DW. I have 2 DW, shaw's 30" sink and small 10" cab. I love the extra counter space.

I agree, I had to learn the hard way myself. Look for phrases like "integrated" or "panel ready". I have a lot of stainless, and the dishwasher in stainless I just thought was going to make my smallish kitchen look like a clinic.

I got an "integrated" Miele Optima. Check out the appliances forum for advice on the best dishwashers. Mine is installed but the panel isn't on it yet.. nor are my cabinet doors, so I can't tell you what it will look like or give pictures.

The Ikea dishwasher is by Whirlpool (all Ikea's appliances are).

They are beautiful, but know going into it that paneled dishwashers are a bit of a splurge. A dishwasher that accepts panels is more expensive to start with than standard ones and, at least in my case, the panel costs as much as a cabinet. It was worth it to us, but ouch.

I love my kitchenaid ones. I haven't had a new DW in over 11 years but this one holds so much MORE than my old DW and still takes up the same space. I really like my 3rd shelf but I know some people don't. I can have taller items in this one compared to the old one.
