any downside to glass tile backsplashes?

I wasn't planning to get a glass tile backsplash, but after shopping at several tile stores, I (and every salesperson who helped me) keep returning to 1" glass tiles.

I do think it might look very dated in 10-20 yrs because it is SO popular right now. But hey, meanwhile it's darn pretty.

Before I make the leap from my old, easy-maintenance regular-tile backsplash, though, I want to check here to see if anyone has regrets about their glass tile backsplashes. Are they hard to clean? Do they require constant wiping to look good? Does the color/appearance look different after installation? Anything?

I have a glass tile backsplash in my bathroom and it is fine. Granted it doesn't get tomato sauce splattered on it, only occasional toothpaste. It is easy to clean and looks great. Just make sure that when it is applied it is on "straight". One small section looks slightly askew to me but it is barely noticeable.

After seeing the title to the thread, that's exactly what I was coming in here to say. I don't think it'll take more than another 10 years, either.

Bill, in an old thread (yes, people, I really DO search topics before posting questions), you addressed the dated issue by suggesting that glass tile has gone in an out of favor many times. I was actually encouraged by that, but now your answer sounds more definitively negative. Bummer.

I do think that larger glass tiles might help on that front, and they would probably be easier to clean than the irregular, rough-edged 1x1s I'm considering. (Ashland series from Hakatai) But I can't find larger tiles anywhere at a price I can afford, so I'm feeling stuck with 1x1.

Check out modwalls.com. They have 4x4 and 3x6 glass tiles that are pretty reasonably priced. We've ordered a few samples and they are really nice. Good luck!

We've been going crazy trying to find the right backsplash. Seems like this is the hardest decision of all!!

In my opinion, glass tile backsplashes are more trendy than more traditional (and timeless) ceramic tile or stone tile. BUT, they can be lovely and if it is what you really want then maybe you should do it. It isn't a huge cost item relative to the rest of the kitchen and could always be changed out 5 or 10 years down the road if it looks too dated to you.

I think everything gets dated so you might as well get what you like. Tumbled marble backsplashes are classic, but the NY Times says those are now dated. Glass will be around because it works so well with other materials. It's beautiful with stone. It's another texture to work with for a designer. I agree that the size of the tiles might change, but I'm also considering the Ashland in water clear. You can have breakage issues if the glass tiles get too big, and the smooth glass larger tiles show every spot and imperfection in the glass.

mmme-- The first line of Blondelle's post is right on--

I think everything gets dated so you might as well get what you like.

It's YOUR kitchen. If you like the glass mosaics, then go with it!!

Now, Blondelle, I specified the FIRST line for a reason. Don't believe anyth..... er..... EVERYTHING you read in the NYT!! They've said tumbled marble is so yesterday, and that granite countertops are passe. I have a feeling the designer they have writing that column has all his/ her taste in his/ her mouth!!

Bill, you should invent a 'velcro' tile board system for the backsplash. When one gets bored with glass, just replace it with tile. Keep a stash of velcro boards for your kitchen.
    Same thing goes for appliances.

You know, I've always liked small glass mosaic tiles--even the old ones from the seventies. I always remember a museum we visited when I was in elementary school with an enormous green and blue tiled fountain--I thought it was the most beautiful thing. I love them then and still do, hence, I have a glass mosaic tile backsplash in my kitchen.
